Made it out there this afternoon. Fun puddles and awesome scenery and view of Saddleback. I towed an audi wagon and a grand cherokee out of puddles and had to tow the cherokee to the road cause his engine wouldn't restart.

Also found a challenging little section along the trail and actually had to use my bridging ladder to get out. That was cool. Unfortunately the pic doesn't show the wheel in the middle of the waffle board, but supposedly it was flexing a lot. they are 14" wide and 4' long and this was my first time using one - worked great and prevented any undercarrige s****age coming over the lip of the little "cliff."

The kid driving the Audi I rescued didn't have the front threaded recovery eye with him, so I had to tow from the rear. He forgot to use his brakes as we exited one puddle and entered down into the next and rolled right into my spare tire. Oops.

And my buddy hanging of the side to counterbalance. You can't tell from the pic, but I was pitched 29* at that point which felt really scary with all the weight of the roof tent and bridging ladders up there.

Pic of the bridging ladder in action.

Looks like quite the adventure. Good on you for helping those not fortunate enough to be driving a Cruiser. :p

Is that tippy hill the one just above the entrance that links the top of that small grade to the entrance at the bottom?

No, It was a little further in and on the right (if you're headed up canyon) just beyond the short little hill climb that let's you test out suspension articulation. It's a tiny loop, very lightly traveled, that leaves the road bed over the berm, then goes up and makes a turn around an oak tree. Making that turn is the off camber section cause it puts you perpendicular to the slope. Then it drops very steeply into a little wash that's below a concrete drainage slab up the mountain above. The bridging ladder was used to exit the wash. Those with underbelly armor could probably get by without the bridging ladder, but for me it would have meant the vehicle resting on the cats, and exhaust and the transfer case - not good.

Cool pics! Where's Holy Jim Canyon at?

South OC. El Toro Rd exit off the 5, north to the end, then right a few miles. It's at the base of Saddleback Mtn. There are some private cabins at the end that are on land leased from the forest service. There's also a trailhead to hike up to a waterfall and to the top of Saddleback. Passenger cars can make the driver usually, except when the puddles are really deep.

Awesome pics, thanks for sharing.

The first pic has adventure written all over it and a bonus with the heep and the hood up behind you.

Is that a hula girl on your snorkel?

You have a keen eye. She's hard mounted - I took the spring and her legs out - so she won't flop back in the wind. Makes for a great shadow on the highway when the sun angle is just right. Or an even better silouette.

what kind of waffle board is that?

I bought them off ebay. sticker on the side says AMG Grating. I paid $118 delivered for the set - thought it was a great deal, especially for 14" width rather than 12" which = extra strength for my 7400lb truck and more space for 315 tires.

I've never seen those before. Are they designed for this use? Or for something else? Looks like they're made of some kind of plastic or fiberglass?

I've taken along a couple of 2x12 boards in my truck for this sort of thing, never had to use them yet, but they are heavy and in the way a lot.

Man that looks like fun to explore that area. Been checking it out on google maps, anybody up for a Friday run this week?

Dan.

They are actually industrial grating, used to make catwalks and cover open pits. I think they come in 4'x8' sheets. The guys on ebay and some of the offroad shops just buy the full sheet and cut them up to sell the pieces. The guy i bought them from will cut them to any size you need.

They are sold specifically for the application I used it for, or for bridging gaps. It's fiberglass with a 2" grid. weigh about 40lbs each, I store them between the RTT and the roof in brackets i welded to my crossbars. supposedly they have a 14,000lb breaking strength when supported 2" on either side. that means you can span up to a 3'8" gap.
