Daniel.watters, I agree! I am going either one of those and calling it done! I have met people who have travel through Africa with no winch! (I will not be that person however, lol). I think a good rear locker and a 12K Warn winch will suit me fine.

I will update once I start the 2H engine rebuild here soon. I ordered a turbo kit and rebuild kit for the 2H.

Just a update:

- I ordered a Denco 2H HJ47 turbo kit (Just got off the phone with them in Australia) http://www.dencodiesel.com/toyota-l...bocharger-system-toyota-landcruiser-hj47.html. The only thing it does not come with is the exhaust. I can simply measure this and have a muffler shop bend a cut a piece for me and weld it on.

- I am going to call PWR tomorrow to check into the liquid to air intercooler. I know most people like the air to air, but the liquid to air I have been told is better. Just to be safe you can carry a pump for the setup and you should be good.

- I am going to move my air cleaner out of the engine cab and run piping to it. I was told a company called Donaldson makes good ram style air cleaners. I included a picture as a reference.

Making progress on the 2H diesel engine rebuild on the overland vehicle. I have taken off the cylinder head (being sent off to be inspected for structural integrity), water pump, battery, alternator, starter, radiator, intake/exhaust manifolds, EDIC (being replaced with a mechanical cutoff cable), push rods/cover, bearing caps, pistons, fuel injection nozzels, glow plugs, oil/fuel filters, and a few other misc items. Now once the engine rebuild kit comes in next week, the engine is for the most part ready to rebuild. Allot of the parts that are critical to mechanical functioning and prone to potential failure are being replaced and the old functioning parts are being kept as spares (such as the alternator, starter, water pump, etc.).

I just wanted to thank the following companies for donated products for my overland journey: Optima battery (Red and yellow top batteries donated), Warn (12K LB electric Endurance winch donated), GoPro (GoPro cameras to mount and document trip).

Great thread Vincent thanks for sharing the build. Great to see a few companies getting behind you on your world travels. If you make it downunder my shout for a few beers after I show you around this part of the east coast.

ozcruiser,

Thank you for the comment and the very last leg in my trip will be in Australia. If I survive this entire trip, I will take you up on that offer!

I'm sure the truck will need some work by then so my workshop will be open if you need a hand with anything. :)

Picture of the head off the engine block mocked up with the intake/exhaust manifolds, valve cover, and turbo.

Today I cleaned the valve rocker shaft, figured out I needed to replaced the combustion chambers (this engine is indirect injection), applied high temperature engine paint to various parts of the powertrain, and came up with a game plan to remove the piston sleeves from the engine block.

I am waiting on the engine rebuilt kit, intercooler, external air cleaner box/pre-cleaner (Donaldson brand), and a few other random parts to get this powertrain squared away.

The 2H engine is starting to come together and should send the troopy touring with plenty of grunt. Make sure you get a good EGT and boost gauge to monitor the turbo and head temp I would also spend the money on a good dyno tune for engine longevity.
Man it sounds like a great trip wish I could do the same but the family need me at home so I'm looking forward to your travels and photo's.
Cheers

Hey mate!,

That is a great idea and exactly what I was planning on doing! I have already been looking at good gauges the past several days. I can't wait to fire it up to hear it run again! Right now I am hunting down a good set of pre-combustion chambers for it in the U.S. If not I will have to order them probably from Australia.

I will be documenting the trip on my website at www.overlandveteran.com :).

Drop into Brisbane on your way to Coffs mate. A warm bed and shower will do you wonders.

Coffs is where ozcruiser is mate. East coast, a handful of hours between Brisbane and Sydney.

Update:

I Order my Autometer gauges for the Land Cruiser in preparation for the engine rebuild, turbo, and intercooler install.

I ordered a oil temperature, pyrometer (Exhaust gas temperature), tachometer (really cool!, straps right on the alternator), and a boost gauge.

They are illuminated using perimeter incandescent lighting. Red and green bulb covers are included to change back light color if you desire as well.

Nice! It will be many years (I have to get through the Americas, Africa, Europe, and Asia first!), but if I survive the trip I will come see you! Promise mate :).
