Make sure if you cross state lines with a commercial vehicle you have the proper stickers. My brother-in-law got busted with his cabinet shop box truck in KS. Since he is in and out of KC area all the time. He had to get some DOT type number for the box truck...
 
How would the DOT #s work if the goose neck trailer were to have "Not For Hire" on it and the small trailer had a DOT #?
 
The company would have to have a dot number and it would need to be displayed on the power unit along with gvw ratings for a commercial interstate hauler.

For intrastate it's not required but I'm still a commercial vehicle, subject to inspection, blah, blah, blah as I understand it. I've got a call into a buddy of mine on with KHP that does a lot of motor carrier stuff.
