I have a 2005 GMC Sierra Base. 4.3 2wd standard cab 6.5 bed. NV3500 trans, 3.73 gears and TruTrac diff. No AC and hand crank windows.

My wife and I are considering a 4wd Lexus GX460 for our next vehicle. Nothing crazy just something to supplement my truck for going up to our cabin and travel in comfort during our retirement years.

I live in the same neck of the woods you do, e.g. So. Cal and we go everywhere from desert to high country and beyond. My wife and I both had our own Landcruiser's (100 series) and out GX is by far the best vehicle we've ever had.
You will absolutely love it! Even in pure stock form. 👍

Thank you for the welcome guys. I have been researching everything from a Rubicon Wrangler to a 4Runner. There is no denying that Jeep has a corner on the market of a hard core rock crawler. But I have to be honest with myself and it's just not my cup of tea. I have dirt bikes for that kind of stuff. I can see an endless money pit when getting into that kind of hobby.

Something comfortable yet capable when in a sticky situation. I want highway and daily driver comfort as well as some forest road comfort. And honestly the price difference between a loaded 4 Runner and GX460 is not that far apart. I have 1st hand experience with the Toyota and Lexus brand. And even our 20+ year old Lexus's are still solid and comfortable.

As far as the Jeep I'm not even considering one after seeing how many are up on the lifts at the local dealer. And the build quality, quite frankly, IMO is horrible. Even the top of the line Gladiators look cobbled together and every single Wrangler JL/Gladiator have orange peel paint jobs. And they are getting over 70K for some of the loaded models. It was not until I actually saw those in person I was put off.

My best friend who passed away over a year ago was a big Jeep fan and owner. I wanted to keep his dream alive by getting one. But reality set in and I have to be honest with my needs. I just don't see myself slapping on a set of 40's and tackling John Bull, Holcomb Creek and Gold Mountain. I have a capable enduro for that.

I don't think it's so much the case now as it was when I purchased my GX, but several years ago, If you wanted a capable Toyota off roader, everyone only thought of 4R's and Tacoma's. No one would ever think of the GX's (either GX470 or GX460). Everyone considered them soccer Mom school haulers. In fact, when I purchased mine from the dealer, it was about 5 years old with only about 32,000 miles on the clock. they just got it in and hadn't even had a chance to puff it out yet. It was owned by a small Korean Mom.

How did I know? I hit the seat memory button and at 6'-0", the seat went up so far, it almost crushed my knees in the dash. First clue: small person.
Then I turned on the radio, the satellite radio was tuned into a Korean radio station (along with others that were programed in). Second clue.
Looking through the interior, I found little trinkets of toys and snack crumbs. Third clue.
Thus my conclusion. (or maybe a very small Korean soccer Dad??

The purchase price was also much lower than I could have had any equal or even older 4R for, especially with that low of miles, a V8, leather, 3 climate zones, etc. etc. etc.!
The GX is still kind of a secret but I think people are starting to figure it out. The clue is how much more aftermarket that's becoming available. The only reason I purchased my 2013 and not newer is that at the time there were not any steel bumpers available for the 2014+ models.
