Hi, still working on replacing the carpeting (90 FJ62), in reinstalling the hi-lo shifter boot, I have somehow lost and/or broken off the female nuts that were attached on the inside of the tunnel for the bolts to anchor in. Has happened to two of them (of four) so far and I am still not having fun wrangling these things. It’s a PITA to get them aligned and seated. What’s recommended to remedy this little snafu? I am sure there’s a fastener out there made just for a case like this. As always, thank you to all you folks who share your expertise and knowledge with us who solicit your assistance.

Found the nuts under the truck. Photo attached. Did I mix up the bolts and they aren’t the right ones? My inventory control isn’t the best.

Those are captive nuts which are spot welded to the underside of the cover plate. They aren't designed for a lot of torque (maybe 5 Nm) so if the threads are damaged or corroded, this happens.

Yeah, they're captive. Now that they're broken off, you gotta weld in new ones or put a nut+washer on the back side.

drill a little bigger and get 4 riv-nuts snapped there :)

This ^^. You can buy metric inserts and retain the proper JIS bolt. For inserting you can pick up a less expensive tool for only the size you need, or a tool that can handle multiple size nutserts.

I like these. I’ve never worked with these before but have heard the term but didn’t dig into them. Like so many things, they are a whole subject to themselves. I was kind of thinking of those plastic license plate number inserts for the general solution approach. I don’t want to spend a fortune on something I use once. I have a pop rivet gun and hoping that will work. Do I need to modify that in some way? I prefer to avoid the “cheap” way but am not totally against it.

I will be out and about tomorrow so I will stop by the local fastener business and see what we can figure out. Thank you.

Rivet gun won't work , you need the real thing that's why I suggested the bolt and washer method. I do have the tool and I still do that trick sometime when space is a concern. It work fine ;)

The needed rivet nuts are small enough, M6x1.25? (I'm guessing here) that the bolt and washer method will work.
M6x1

To my fellow mechanics by necessity, not being familiar with this, I needed a little more guidance. Found multiple you tube videos but I thought this how to was the shortest and sweetest. Here’s the history of the rivnut and how to DIY the install.

Always learning something new. Thank you.
