Hi guys.
Im tryin to get the new 22re in the mini truck fired for a trip this weekend, and it just doesnt wanna happen. Ive tried all my diagnostic routiens and am still a little stumped.

It fires but doesn't catch. I know because without the exhaust manifold on i can see flame exiting every cylinder. My first intuition was that the fuel injectors weren't firing, and that it was burning fuel just off the cold start injector, but I checked signal voltage at the first injector and i read a good .12 volts switching.

I checked the cold start injector and its doin its job just fine. The previous engine i had in it ran but had a bad head gasket. so the only stuff that swaped was any stuff attached to the motor including the wiring harness.

All I can think of is the tps and its hard to believe that it would prevent it from starting.

any ideas?

A bad TPS shouldn't keep it from running, the ECU will go into "limp home" mode and still run the engine.

Are there any codes stored in the ECU?

Try doing the fuel pump jumper to make sure it's running?

BTW, you probably know this, but never run an engine without the exhaust manifold attached. Good way to burn out a valve.

Hi ken.

Yea i know about the valves if it would have caught i would have shut it down supa fast.

The fuel pump worked just fine with the old engine, and the only thing ive done is put a new filter on it, so i cant imagine that it would have suddenly stopped working. also I yanked the cold start injector and watched it spray loads of fuel into the manifold. so im pretty sure ive got decent pressure at the fuel rail.

The only codes reading are the same ones it always throws about my o2 sensor, but its been doing that for years now so nothing new has shown up.

So is it firing w/o the manifold, then not with it tightened up?

Or just won't run period with the mani off?

I helped my cousin change out a Ford 300 six one time. We had it all done except for bolting on the manifold, tried starting it and fired right up... Torqued the manifold down and it never would start.

Changed that whole motor for a clogged cat converter:lol:

And hey, tap on those injectors. They might be trying to seize up.

Ive tried starting both with and without the exhaust manifold hooked up. Like I said though i drove the truck to where it sat a couple days ago with the old engine, so im sure the exhaust system isnt holding anything up.

And ive been messing with the injectors a bit, but seeing as how im seeing combustion visually i don't think its a fuel delivery problem.

ok think im getting closer. i noticed that the distrubutor was wired all funky. from top left it reads #4 #2#1#3 in a clockwise fassion. My only guess is someone wired it backwards due to thinking the camshaft was 180 out. I cycled it through 360 degrees of rotation and at both 0 degree marks on the crank pully the rotor was pointed at the #2 and #3 wires.

Me thinks I need to take the valve cover off and check that the top and bottom ends are timed together and then just wire the spark plug wires correctly.

hopefully this will solve my problems.

Sounds like the dizzy is off a few teeth? Pull the distributor out. Pull the plugs. Set the engine at #1 cylinder TDC on the compression stroke. Then re-install the dizzy with the rotor pointing at the #1 wire on the cap. reinstall plugs and wires.

double check the correct firing order.

The crossover tube is installed between the AFM and intake and theres no air leaks?

Brake booster vac line installed or plugged?

There is gas in the tank, right?

ok thanks for the support guys.

I got it to start and start well.
I pulled the valve cover and confirmed that the top and bottom end were both at 0.
Then I just pulled the distributor out which was for some reason rotated about 180° out of true, and yanked all the plug wires which were wired in reverse for some other reason.

After that it started right up.
The kid who yanked the engine for me said he didn't do a thing to it from when it was running so either he was lieing, or he had the engine running in a really weird fashion.

ya anytime u see flames out the exahaust go straight to ignition

and a easier way to test fuel pump operation, with key on, open air filter housing and open the door on the air flow meter
