Hi, im Ben I live in in upstate NY. For the past few weeks ive been pouring through a bunch of different 4x4 forums. I want to start a toyot restoration and I cant decide what the best model to use is. I want something 4 door but i dont want a wagon and i know i want a manual trans diesel. the look im goin for is the icon 4x4 fj44. im not too crazy about the modern look of the 1990 and up cruisers. any advice? what would be the best model to use and are there any state-side? or if not how could I get one registered in the states? Ive read some that its tough to get these imports to pass emissions, if i was planning on putting a new diesel engine in it before i drove it on the road would it matter? and help/ advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

IIRC, the only models originally sold in the US are the 25, 40, 55, 60, 62, 80, 100, and 200. There are others around, but they are aftermarket imports. You may need to find one over 25 yeas old to import for your needs. John

Its all about the budget.

This one is going to be hard to achieve unless you have access to a 2012 dual cab 79 series.

My advice would be to start getting to like the 80 series wagons. They are plentiful and cheap in the US.
Then ,emission laws permitting, install the best and latest model turbo 6 cyl diesel eg 1HD FT that came in the 80 series
