finally started on the reciever mounted winch plan. will go into either of the front bumper reciever hitches. will soon make a couple rear bumper reciever hitches and perhaps something on the sides. got a 2/0 g disconnect plug from Napa. its only rated at 350A so i hope its up to the task. also have a roll of 2/0 welding cable. will run that to the rear winch plug

the entire comp winch/mount/synthetic rope (only 65ft)/safety thimble/aluminum fairlead should weigh about 80lbs

SO what night do you want to come over and help me out ? Punk!!!!! I drove by Friday night about 9:30 figuring yo uwold be wrenching. Nope all dark and quite.

speaking of winch, found a replacement for mine for a hundred bucks. needs a bearing on te outside drum and that parts one I have in the garage has it. Trying to work out a deal right now.

Someone said they would be by after the kids were asleep. What about tonight, could swing by and pull those castr shims and help with our winch.

I am digging your rear quarter panel protection! any plans to change or cover the rear bumper bar thing?

Dustin, you forgot to mention the special "locking" TEQ bolts we put in last night . . . . See you at 4:00 tomorrow. I grabbed the North Face Tent for you.

The rear crossmember has been a topic of much thought. it is of good design and solid. but even more importantly it is light. i dont want to cut it off. on many occasions i have had the 80 fall backward a bit into a rock wall while trying steep climbs. i want some bumer back there so i dont want to shorten the rear frame. with the rear axle moved back and the big tires the departure angle isn't as much an issue as it used to be.

i was going to cover the whole rear crossmember with sone 16g to make it look prety but im leaning away from that. the truck is likely goint to get crushed anyway...

I know you are currently working on a removable winch mount, but out of curiosity, is there room to mount a winch between the rear bumper thingy and the body?

there is enough room under that fat 80 rear to mount 5 goats and a turkey. if the removavble winch idea doesn't work in application ill likely mount a permanent winch out back. i seem to need a pull in reverse as often as forward

YES YOU DO, DON'T YOU?

Dusty, your rig is really coming around and together!! Great work.

I have mentioned before on another thread..... one of my old college buds had the same winch system you are working towards on his K5 blazer. We used to wheel a lot of really tight, southern appalachian trails where getting a tug from the side or anyone getting around you to recover you, just aint' going to happen. He had a Warn mounted on a receiver (integrated solenoid) and a marine weather plug wired up next to the receiver mount location. He kept the winch in the truck out of all the weather/mud/snow/salt and when he needed it, just got out, plugged it in, winched out, put it away.

Great idea IMHO.
