I was just searching through some old threads and stumbled across this. I was the previous owner of this BJ71 and had sold it to this nice Australian couple. Sadly the irony of their last post was the truck with all their belongings was stolen in San Francisco cutting their trip short and sending them home.

Well that sucks!

They never even made it out of the US!

Goes to show, the US is as much of a problem for security as anywhere in Latin America. And this coming from a guy who has been down the Pan Am twice!

Cheers

ever been to Oakland?

Sounds like a great trip.

I'd practicE KISS while you make this trip. In addition to all the reasons other people mentioned, skinny tires will be more available down in many parts of Latin America. I'd also suggest to bring cigarettes. The boarder guards between the states of Mexico and probably other places as well love 'em.

Do you speak any of the languages down there?

haha, read the posts above, you missed the important part.

Hi Thanks for the ideas. We are getting pretty well set up (has only taken 10k miles) We are still struggling with what to do with security for our vehicle any suggestions on how to prevent / minimize the damage of leaving our vehicle unattended.

They didn't know how important this was going to be!! What a shame.

What would be some simple things to do to prevent the vehicle from being stolen? Some sort of kill switch? What else?

How about the vehicle contents? I'm guessing good tinting on the rear windows, other ideas?

This raised some good questions so I started a vehicle Security thread here:

OP any updates on this vehicle build and subsequent adventures?

I'm interested in short wheelbase Cruisers for overland purposes.
