So I recently bought this 4runner. That had a new timing chain placed on it. Probably used a cheap autozone timing chain. But the engine ran like a sewing machine before the chain broke. I was sitting in my drive away went to crank the engine it backfired and then that was it. Crank and cranked. So I checked for spark and so forth before finding the timing chain was broke. I really hope I haven't bent the valves but I not sure how to reset the cam with the crank to make sure I have good alignment. Any answer to this. And will probably pull the top to make sure haven't bent any valves but just kinda sucks. The new chain has only been on the truck less than 1k So the other question go back with factory chain or engine builder or what sure dont want this to happen again in the future. Planning on using it as a daily driver. And any other solution would be of great help to me
Thanks in advance

nice 4runner , sorry that happened , but I would buy a timing chain only from toyota , that timing chain is to important to skimp out on. thats what I would do

You need to at least pull off the timing cover to reinstall a new chain, but if I were you I'd plan to pull the head as well. Post your general location, maybe someone in your area can come give you a hand and support. If you were near me I would offer my garage and tools.

I also suggest you do what I did: OEM Toyota chain and tensioner, and DOA metal guides. Others have used the engnbldr timing set but I don't like them for several reasons. Get the gasket set from Toyota, call Sam with your VIN.

Yes, OEM chain and tensioner. Toyota has the best quality chain that will not stretch as much or as fast as aftermarket.

Does anyone have any opinion on engine builders cam 261 crawler and looking to put new headers (looking at LCE header but can't find them online anywhere do they still make them?) in the truck since I'm got to pull the head figure might as well save up some one and build it right. And other other suggestion would be greatly appreciated

Really headers are not be necessary, the Toyota exhaust manifold is very well designed. I have a complete exhaust, header back from LCE, it is nice but I could have saved some cash if I had just stuck with the Toyota header.
How many miles are on your engine? Is this head the original head? The older the head the more prone to cracking and warping they are, when I rebuilt my 22RE I did not bother with the old head, I got a complete head and cam from engbuilder, he ships for free in the lower 48. Remember a new cam is no good with a crappy intake and exhaust and old dirty injectors. Oh and I chose the head with larger valves and ports, I also had my injectors professionally cleaned and tested, installed a complete LCE exhaust and intake and spent the time to COMPLETELY clean the entire intake manifold.

I swapped out the factory 15" rims for Tacoma 16" rims, I get 20mpg and 19mpg with the AC on. Sticking with Toyota parts is a good insurance plan that will pay off in the end, the only gaskets that were not toyota I got from LCE.

Good luck!

She got 248k on her. But she's back Alive again new timing chain and lil work and she's running again. All I have yet to do is set the timing and readjust the valves Just not enough time in the day with wife and kids ha. Anyways the engine is all original. So talked with Beno at lowes toyota and planning on get a new stock engine from them probably in about a year so just gotta keep her going til then. They sell a short block there so just get a few new parts and ill have a new engine. So hopefully she will hold together til then and in the meantime will try to redo the interior and so on

I picked mine up from Sam about a year ago, along with a pile of other parts to complete the build. It will be residing in my 1990 pickup soon I hope. I have a couple things to get done first, but since I've about decided to sell my 88 and the motor I was building for it, the engine stand will be free'd up to start putting it together.

So not sure if anyone has ever had this problem but drove my truck today for about 20 min. Noticed lil smoke coming from under the engine hood. So i looked and noticed that my exhaust manifold was glowing red just above the o2 sensor don't think there is any blockage engine runs great not smoke from exhaust engine temp is good. Anyone with any ideas??

Check your timing ASAP. I've seen severely mis adjusted timing cause that (unburned fuel in the exhaust). Either that or you are running very lean. Possible causes being bad TPS, clogged injector(s), bad O2 sensor...
