Just wanted to report back with an update. Picked up this '87 FJ, manual, with 190k on her today. Actually bought her a few weeks ago but drove her directly from the PO's house to my mechanic for an inspection. Pulled her into my driveway for the first time this evening, and I'm stoked. Minimal leaking from the block, and pulls all the way to 85 on the highway with no issues or hesitation. Even the AC works!
Got some parts coming from member Mel Lowe (thanks!) which will help complete the package, as the interior's pretty beat.
Mechanic recommended the oil pan gasket be replaced at some point, and to keep an eye on the oil level until then. Full fluid flush. Overall she got a good report card.
Thanks to all for the help along the way. This is a new beginning for me and without doubt I'll have lots of questions along the way, and before too long hopefully I'll be able to answer some questions from others.
Thanks! Hopefully it'll prove to be a good choice. Needs a rear bumper and some attention given to the paint but she ought to clean up well.
I'm assuming the color is Beige Metallic (4E8) based on this chart and will order some touchup paint soon. Has rust on right rear wheel well that'll need to be ground down and dealt with. Might end up doing a two tone plastidip paint job as I'll never match the original shade, and later if I want to fully respray it I can remove the plastidip.
One thing I've noticed while driving around the last few days is a noticeable lunging when decelerating in gear, but off throttle. For example, coming to a red light in third gear but not on the throttle, it does not decelerate smoothly, but lurches/lunges a bit. I just put it in neutral (which behaves as expected) but it's on my list of things to investigate.
This is the first carbureted car I've ever owned, and this morning I used a choke for the first time since cutting lawns in high school
Congrats on a great find. I too have the decel lurch but only intermittently. Lubing the throttle linkage seemed to help a bit but am continuing to investigate as I work through restoring systems and base lining.
