I have 1978 fj40 land cruiser. The Fj40 Was Imported From Costa Rica.
Bought it a while back and it ran fine. Now that won't start up.. order new battery still no go. I checked around and found out that the ignition coil was getting very hot to the touch. So now I'm trying to replace it.
My problem is there's no markings on the ignition coil to tell me whether or not it needed a resistor. Badly worn and Piece of it is falling off.
Next to it it is a little Box. Three wires coming from it, going to a wire harness. And I do not know what this box is could anybody tell me what it could be??? I asked a couple of people but it ranges from a resistor to something to control the lights.
The ignition coil wiring --- one goes to the starter --- the two other ones go to the same wiring harness

.. See Pictures Below .....

Also If That's Not The Resistor For The Ignition Coil, Can I Just Replace The Initial Coil With One With A Resistor Built In ??
I Don't know how to use the tools yet to do a wire trace.

Any help would be very appreciated

You need to clean the contacts and the wires on that little box. Crimp on good terminals would help. Try lightly scraping the insulation to see if its color coated which will help when you find a wiring diagram.

Disconnect the battery ground first. You should go the every connection/plug and clean both contacts. Use a q-tip and apply a light coat of di-electric grease to help keep them clean. Look at the wire right by crimped connectors - corrosion can crawl under the insulation and ruin the connection.

See if any of the free down load manuals will help Land Cruiser Factory Service Manuals (FSMs) - https://www.cruisercult.com/factory-service-manuals.

Coils can run warm.

So have you checked for spark? Maybe your ignition fuse is blown or corroded. Maybe your switch went bad.

Doesn't start doesn't convey enough information. It turns over fast enough but doesn't bark like its trying to start = implies the starter is good but there is no spark or fuel. Get a small can, disconnect the fuel line into the carb - have some one crank the engine and you watch the fuel pulsing smoothly into the can. No then maybe a fuel issue like a bad/weak fuel pump, clogged fuel filter. A water wet paper element in a fuel filter will not let fuel pass for the most part. Warm days and cool night will condense water right out of the air in your gas tank as the tank breathes. Keeping the tank full helps. A yellow bottle of fuel dryer helps more.

Cheap test light and or a VOM is handy.

Early horn relay. Pics nicked fair and square from another mud member.

There is no lettering on the box whatsoever. But I did bought a tone tester and tested it and it was the relay for the horn.
Now I just have to figure out the ignition coil. I thought the resistor would be on top of the ignition coil but there is none. I bought a ignition coil with the resistor built in, If there is another resistor somewhere will that be a problem??
