I purchased a 1981 Fj45 Troopy a few years back and need to find a mechanic in my area. I am no mechanic. I am having to pull the choke all the way out in order for the troopy to run. I was told the carburetor is a straight 6 and that any land cruiser carburetor will work. Is this true? It has also developed rust damage on the hood and grill. Does any one know of a good site to look for or purchase parts for a troop carrier?
IF you are in the US ( I assume you are since you said 'hood'), then you cannot easily use a US Spect carburettor on that rig. You will need to get a non-US one (unless your troopy is from some place which uses smog equipmen - although I assume yours is Aussie, given you have rust on the grille)).
Spector Off Road sells rebuilt non-US carbs for a decent price. #818-882-1238. They also sell hoods and grilles.
Bear in mind that the US Spec grille will not allow you to re-install your interior hood release. If you only have rust on the very bottom of the grille (very common on Aussie rigs for some reason), you may find that it is cheaper to weld new metal in there than to replace it.
Any hood will work, but ideally you want a 75-84 to be 'correct' for your vintage. Your rig will not have the windshield hold-downs like a US Spec one will, but that will not affect the vehicle (and you then be able to fold the windshield down). Also, if you get a pre-81 hood, it will not have the little stainless steel pads on the underside front corners that your hood has.
If you happen to be in New Mexico, then Toyotech is a good place to take them.
If you do happen to be in the US, you can put your troopy in the troopy registry; the link is in my signature.
