help identifying power steering box

previous owner installed power steering but now it is very loose and i think the box is guilty. i would like to move it to use jt outfitters gear box bracket so it won't be in the way when i get bigger tires. can you help me identify my box, tell me whether to use the same kind of box or switch to a 79-85 toyota box as jt outfitters suggests on this page http://www.jtoutfitters.com/product/FJ4045GBI. the number on top of my box is 7812145 and on the round end is 5686815. thanks.

Looks like a Saginaw box from a fullsize Chevy 2wd pickup to me... It's not the usual Saginaw, Scout or Astro van conversion.

I have the "standard" inside the framerails Saginaw conversion. Works great.

I don't like the Toyota pickup conversion 'cause you still have a rod down the outside of the framerail for the driver's side tire to hook on at full turn. You also have to use the stock bellcrank pivot. Compared to what you have now you will be adding joints and links.

Check the teck pages for more info on Saginaw conversions. I prefer the Scout conversion and will be reconverting my truck to it soon...

Like zebra said that is a saginaw from a pick-up truck. Like most I also run the "standard" sag inside the frame rail. I did go one step better and use the 3 1/2" piston instead of the 3 1/8" that most use. It came from a J-20 and is identical in shape and mount style. The larger piston nets about 18% more steering power at the same hydraulic pressure (IIRC). For anyone who already has the standard Impala box this larger sag should bolt in.

You can see where the tire has been rubbing on the outside of the box, which is one reason that most people don't use the pickup Saginaw on Cruisers.

Because if you go much larger than 35" tires it is a bit on the weak side.

well i think my box is what is causing my loose steering problem, so i was trying to figure out what box would best suit my situation. i would like to replace the steering column at the same time. so has anyone used an s-10 column with an s-10 box, or s-10 column with full size truck box, since the s-10 may be weak with 35 inch tires? if i went with a mini toyota truck box, would i have to use a toyota column?

You can use any column with any setup, just depends on source of steering shaft. I vote for the typical inside frame rail Saginaw install. Junkyard Impala, Nova, Malibu etc. for like $30 dollars, when it takes a dump exchange for a good 4.5 turn box from Napa. Very simple and very stout if your plates and welding are up to par. Tons of stuff here on the tech page.
