So rebuilding my 22R. Most of the engine is out, I'm pretty much down to the block sitting in the truck with 1 bolt holding the transmission to the block [the one by the clutch cable :/ its a bitch] and the chain to hoist it out on and ready to go.

However... I've been at this stage for about a month.

I just.. feel like its going to be so daunting putting the engine back together, and all the crap still left to do, i've lost motivation and lost faith.

Can you guys help me get my mojo back?

EDIT: I was able to get that last [8th, G52 transmission] bolt out... and still can't get the block to move. I've taken undone the front two engine mounts (the only ones I know of) and taken out the starter studs etc... but it won't come off of the transmission. I've never taken an engine out before. Help :/

Use the force Curse, a suitcase sized engine block cannot beat you. Hug your bellhousing & fondle the big end (watch out for the bolts that secure that exhaust stiffener, sometimes they come in from the front) once you have found that all holes are empty, tug on your block & wiggle it side to side. Post lots of pictures, that will help you get your mojo back. Also go out and sit in the drivers seat for a few minutes, that will make you want your truck back even more.

Then really really need to use the vehicle some day (i.e. your only car), then see if that motivates you to get er done!

You married? Go ask the wife what she needs done. Rake some leaves. Patch the gutter. Paint the garden shed. Rehang the soap dispenser. All great endeavors with so much more challenge and satisfaction than rebuilding an engine.

Don't be such a pissant, you loser. Stop whining and think about all the stupid chores you could be wasting your time on instead of communing with internal combustion. Fish or cut bait you wanker.

!!! :D

I had to use a combination of screwdrivers and prybars to get the tranny/motor to separate. The dowel pins between the motor and bellhousing did not want to give up very easy. Once I figured out it was the dowel pins I gave it hell and it popped loose.

Are you rebuilding the motor yourself?

I bought a rebuilt short block. If I didn't need to track down an oil pick up tube, I would have had it assembled and installed in a couple of days.

do something girly so that you have to get your hands dirty or fix something so that you feel like a man again. it really isn't that hard to do. i practically rebuilt my engine in aobut a month (almost 3 if you count waiting on parts). just take breaks whenever you get frustrated and it always helps to have friends to help. i got my tranny out pretty easily with the help of my friend and then he helped me put it back in too. just motivate yourself to do it. do whatever it takes.

Man I'm really considering the same thing. The least expensive longblock I've found was $2400 installed from a very reputable company, but I'm just wondering if I could do it myself with plenty of time. I will have another vehicle to drive, and the machine work will only be $1000. Rebuild kit is another $350 to $400 (I think, Im budgeting a little high with the thought of getting high quality parts). I don't know, it's about to be winter and I would have to be doing this s*** outside, aside from being able to put the motor indoors while I put it all together. No garage for the install though, which sucks ass. Plus think of how much of an ass you'll feel like if you tow it to a shop half taken apart, or how little money you'll get if you sell it, or how pissed you will be to know you got halfway there and gave up :grinpimp: I think I need to just take mine apart and force myself to finish it, because once I do it once, it'll be a lot easier next time :flipoff2:

Just give it to me! :D Get a mirror and a flashlight and make sure there's no hiding bolts you missed, (Did you get the 2 up top that you have to reach from behind the tranny with some extensions?) if not, then it's just a bit stuck, and you'll need to give it a whoopin'! :D It'll come, and think, once it's out the real fun begins!!! New parts!!!

ALRIGHTY

I got it out today!

I fought hard, but eventually I was able to wrestle it free \o/

Thank you guys for your support, pictures comin in hot!

Okay, so this is going to break the thread, but its my thread, I'll break it if I want to!

Hey Curse,

When the first engine you rebuild is the one out of your truck, it can be a little scary. When I was 10, my Dad rebuilt the straight 6 of our Chevy pickup. I helped him with some of the work. Watching him do it, it didn't look all that tough to do. So, I started rebuilding lawn mower engines and it was fun. I am mechanically inclined, so it came easy for me. Now that you have it out, it will get a little easier. One thing that can help is, put small parts in ziplock bags and write where they came from on the bag with a marker. This makes reassembling the engine easier. Then, when you get it back together and running, you'll feel great saying that you did it yourself.

Good on ya, Curse.

You should try to borrow an engine stand (or buy one for 100 bucks). It really makes the rest of the project go better. Way better.

Man, doesn't it feel great when the SOB is out, all chained up and easy to get at!
So submissive!
Anyhoo, Take LOTS of pics during the teardown not just for posting but for putting it all back together.
When you're out creeping in 4LO, all that blood and swear will be remembered and respected -- by you and all your buds @ IH8MUD.

I'm just trying to increase my post count!

What's up with your oil pressure sender? Was the connector welded on or what?
I have a 22RE with a gauge-(no light)-sender and I can't hardly keep mine on.

I had to cut the d*mn wire!! I could not for the life of me get it off :x

Furthermore, the garage isn't big enough for my rig to fit in :[

As soon as I gots da cash I'll be doing the actual rebuild... anyone around boise happen to have a spare engine stand laying around...? <3

Harbor Freight usually has the light duty ones for about $30.
