Help: Hood won't stay down

Newbie with a 73 FJ55. (Bought the 73 from mudder KarlV in WA)

Need help understanding the theory of what keeps the hood latched. I have realigned the plate with the female side, the hood latches and stays down better but at 55mph it still pops up onto the safety. What is the adjustment on the male side about? How does it work, (What is it catching) and how do I adjust it. Do you clamp the spring with vise grips?

Any help appreciated.

As for your hood, I've never experienced you issue, but maybe these will help.
