You may have gotten one of the new self-sealing cans that the old can taps won't fit.

The guy at the auto store said something to that affect. I may just get a can of regular and then add the UV separate.

Yes. Just do that.

Even without the UV dye IF you have a significant leak...there will be little to no pressure the next day and it will be evident. If there is only a slow leak then it might not even be worth chasing down.
 
One of the most common leaks we see is at the 4-bolt plate on top of the compressor. Once you have refrigerant on the system, spray the fittings with a soapy water solution and look for bubbles.
