I have no idea what this is. One of the hoses comes from the air cleaner. Why would someone take the belt off of this? The truck is a '77 FJ40...

not sure where burque is but yea some places like california need that baby up and running.. can't see what the rest of your engine looks like but if all that it is missing is a belt then you should be all set.

That thing that is hooked up to the air cleaner is called the Air Pump.. the other hose should go to the EGR valve which hooks up to a pipe coming off the carburetor and a bunch of other places.. grab a haynes manual for a basic run-down of what it should look like

Turn the pulley by hand and see if it will turn. Sometimes the previous owner will remove the belt instead of fixing it. When pump fails it start making a wierd noise or they simply freeze up and stop turning.

Also make sure you don't have a leak at the base of the carb or intake/manifold. You can check by spraying carb cleaner at the these areas and see if the engine will rave up while you spray. Also check for loose hoses in the carb area. Good luck.

So after your truck passes emissions and gets licensed then do a search on de-smogging your truck and you will find you don't need that...unless you're in Kalifornia.

I wish. In NM we have to have emissions to re-register. So every two years it needs to pass.:crybaby:
