I have a serious issue! My 91 4runner wont move when i put it in drive. Its def not a mechanically issue. All the linkage is in working order. Has to be electrical because every time i put it in and out of drive i hear a clicking noise coming from the rear of the vehicle. Is there a sensor or relay that tells the tranny to engage? Oh and if I start it in 4 low it all works, just 2 and 4 high is messed up. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Put the trans in park, switch it to 4WD-Low and back up 15 feet. Drive around a bit.

Now, put it in Park or Neutral and switch back to 2WD. Back up 15 feet and drive forward more than 15 feet.

Does the 4WD light stay on in 4WD?

Does it go off once back into 2WD?

If not it could be a bad transmission solenoid, since I assume you have an auto.

Consult the FSM or FAQ's here if ya need more help.

**Are you sure the clicking is from the trans, and not a bad ADD actuator?**

Norcal, Ok so i need to mention that someone retarded wired the rear window to run on a toggle switch and i have a feeling that he messed something up when he did that. The clicking sounds like the window relay to be honest but im not sure. I will try all those things though. Thank you very much though... Oh and whats an ADD actuator?

OK so I confirmed that the runner will absolutely only drive in 4 low. Any of the high range gears do nothing. The 4wd light does go on and off accordingly but sometimes doesnt stay locked in place. However, when it comes on and off theres something clicking in the rear of the vehicle. Anyways im starting to think its the t-case.... comments? opinions? I can hear a whining noise when i tack it up in high range.

Seen this yet, wealth of information along with the FSM link to run diagnostics http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-buchanan/93fsm/autotrans.html . I don't want to assume anything else until you have had a chance to also read through the tech here: A340 Transmission issues and FAQs - Pirate4x4.Com

Reason being is it could just simply be a solenoid, or more, and I'm not heading back down towards Loomis (location on your avatar) any time soon and would want to see the wiring mess you describe as well as have it run in my hands before giving you the wrong direction to pursue.

Read through though and I'll try to e-help as best possible.

*Not to be a dick either, once up to operating temp the ATF is at the correct level? Which A340 do you have, the one with the separate or the joined/shared fluid?
