How long does a helmet last before the materials fatigue to a point to be not effective upon impact?

I have a brand new Giro Saros when I'm riding the Fixie, but I just noticed this morning after riding in on the MTB, my Giro Havoc was manufactured in 01.

You should be OK. From what I've read, as long as the helmet hasn't had an impact from a fall it will still be in spec. If you decide to upgrade to new, you can be sure the new helmet will be lighter, stronger, etc.

If it were me, I'd find a reason to switch. Eight years of sweat would be enough for a change.

Good call. My new Giro is weightless and the stink on the MTB helmet is not that bad, yet.

I'm pretty sure Giro has a trade-in deal where you get a deal.

Gonna look into it.

Thanks!

I just grabbed a new Giro Pneumo on Sierratradingpost.com with a 30% off coupon they mail you if you sign up for their mailer.....FOR $50..

Its basically exactly like my $180 Giro Atmos as far as ventilation and protection.

Quoted from Giro's instructions manual:

Any helmet subjected to a violent impact should be discarded and destroyed,
although helmet damage may not always be evident. In addition, it is
recommended that helmets be replaced after three years from the date of
purchase, or if it does not fit you any more. Since this helmet is made of
expanded polystyrene foam, there’s a chance it may be penetrated by sharp
objects.

Good call. I may upgrade in the next week or two.

I just hate throwing s*** away.
