I just bought a 1989 Toyota 4x4 4 cylinder fuel injected

Here is the problem. The cooling system is in working order, doesn’t leak, doesn’t get hot, thermostat opens and closed yada yada yada.

I don’t think the hot coolant is going through the heater core fast enough, I turn on the heater fan and its hot for a little bit bust gets luke warm very quick. How do I prove that the heater core is stopped up? Or is there something I’m missing?

Thanks
Jake

Wrong section.

You have an FJ62, so should be in the 60 series section. That said, make sure the heater valve (under the hood near the firewall) is functioning properly; i.e., wide open when you are trying for maximum heat in the cabin.

Welcome,

Curtis

Edit: Oh, and I doubt it's a 4 banger...;)

4 banger

sorry about being int he wrong section

I check all the normal fixes...and all are working right
and it has four plug wires that makes it a 4 banger

lol

Thanks
Jake

Jake,

Don't mind him, you're in the right section.

If the fan is blowing and the heater control valve is opening all of the way, then you have one of two problems. Restricted flow through the heater core or air in the heater core. I had to have my heater core flushed by a radiator shop to get it to working.

If you think that your core is clogged you could pull the heater hoses at the firewall and clamp on some garden hoses to check it out, low flow out of the hose would indicate how severely clogged it is. You probably couldn't clear it this way but it would provide a visual indicator of how much water you can flow through there. If it is clogged then you probably need to look @ the rest of your cooling system as well. If it was only air logged then you just cleared it with the garden hose, and your water pump was weak.

could also be restricted of air. is there lots of pine needles in the cowl? 20 years of pine needle build up...

just somthing to check into if the flush doesnt do it. cause the clogged water passage is more likley in your case.

oh, and make sure your heater valve is opening all the way
