My rack leeks a little where the shaft from the steering wheel enters the rack. How long do you think it will last? I never considered it a big problem because I have a Supra that has been doing the same for the last 50k miles. Although, the rack on the Supra does not take much abuse.
Siglo and Jim, although there is not an application specific unit for the 100, they do exist for use with rack and pinion units. Toyota even installed them on 86.5 and up Supra and Cressida vehicles.
By design, the rack does function as a stabilzer. Unfortunately, this adds a good amount of heat to the system fluid. Also, think about the massive pressure spikes the seals and rotary valve receive when a 35" tire pushes the opposite way of which you are steering... Why not let an inexpensive cylinder take on the extra stress?

Considering all the loose WB's I've had, maybe that's why MY 100 is wearing out racks?

Well the latest figures aren't too bad. $390 parts and $230 labor for the rack. $300 for front WB repack and tighten (that's high).
So, $920 spent on the front end, plus a CV-joint out of warranty (only needed boots...I wanted a spare). That's $1200 on the front end in 5+ years and 110K miles. The dealer did gave me other front components free under ext warr. We'll see how the next 5-years goes. I spent more money on the front of the 80's re-building axles than I have on the 100....though I did some 100 stuff free.

on the 99 LX the rack is leaking at the boot, well its just wet and no real loose of fluid, been like this for along time......not getting worse, re-man OEM racks are $800.......frankly I am not worried about it in the least, but its just a driver for Connie......

If it's leaking from the dust boot then the rack itself is leaking. Just watch your fluid.
A Toyota re-man rack cost me $390 (they first asked $560). John Hocker of Sierra Toyota saved me on that. Labor was $230.
