Hi I've recently tried changing out my headlights but am having the worst time ever trying to put the retainer ring on. It would always pop out when I first bought the vehicle. I starting doing some research and I just realized my retainer ring is not connected. I think that might be my problem. Is the stock 1971 Retainer ring supposed to be Connected or separated? As in.. Is it supposed to be a circle or is the circle supposed to be able to come apart. Hope this makes sense..

It is supposed to be a complete circle. It has a seam, and it sounds like your seam has broken.
Before you go looking too far for a replacement, measure how thick yours is from front to back because they come in different thickness, and one size does not fit all.

Awesome Thank You! I think I found the part so I ordered it. Will come back here if I run into any more problems
There is an early and late style, maybe 1 other, but late model buckets and retainers(the skinny ones) are still available
