Hi All,

I have recently bought a 1991 HDJ81 in Uganda - It has therefore been treated terribly for the last few years and parts are tricky to come by

I have been trying to go over everything and try to get it back to full working order, many thanks to everyone on here as the info has been extremely useful

The truck is a Snow Version and has factory elockers front and back, I have refurbed both and they are working fine on the bench.

My issue is the electrical side, The wiring has been removed for the rear one, and the front is not giving any signal, so I have some questions I cant seem to find the answer to on here:

1. Is there a front and rear locker ECU or just one and why are they?

2. Does the "Locked" signal have to come from the rear locker to the ECU before it will allow the front to be locked?
(the additional issue here is the locking fork has been reinstalled upside down so even if I wire it back up it wont know when the rear is locked see pics)

3. Finally is the connector in the final pic the one that does to the rear locker (I am guessing it is)

Thanks for any help

Ben

There is one ECU for both lockers . In the US models it is located in the passenger side kick panel. Not sure in RHD models if the location is the same.

To enable the front and rear lockers the center must be confirmed electrically first, is the CDL dash light indicator. The rear locked is attempted first only due to the functionality of the rotary switch. The front can actually lock before/independently from the rear.

Not sure of the connector being shown in the picture but thought the locker connector was located inside the rear quarter panel. What the picture may be showing are the connectors for the rear fuel sub-tank.

Thanks Phil
The center one is locking fine and confirming on the dash, I'll keep looking for the ECU I've looked everywhere on the passenger side (LHS) but it is probably under the RHS kick panel
I'll have another go tomorrow

Cheers

Does anyone know part number for rear locker harness. I live in the US and have found several US spec 80 rear axle assemblies with factory elocker but it seems the idiots just cut the harness when the axle was removed from the vehicle. Like every one of them. Does anyone have a harness they would want to part with, or can provide some clarification on part number. I know they have been discontinued by Toyota but there are several numbers according to Megazip. Those being; 82165-60020, 82165-60030, 82165-60090, 82165-60101, and 82165-60100

Agreed with above.

RHD will also have the locker ECU in the passenger side kick panel.
I have done the factory locker axle swap in lx450. Now I’m trying to finish up the same in my HDJ81. I am looking at the passenger (port side) left kick panel and dont see the computer ecu. I dont see it on the right drivers side either but theres a lot of stuff there. This is what I have from donor vehicle. It was a straight forward swap on the lx450. Can anyone confirm location on the HDJ81?

If you are retro fitting locked axles, you'll need to install the ECU.
I believe the harness connectors for the ECU are there at the fuse/relay panel inside the kick for all models

So there could be a connector

So there is just an unused connector instead of switching modules? I know in the lx, the modules were same size and shape. So far I have not found a box like the one anove.

Yes, Toyota uses generic harnesses across multiple models and spec levels.
Its cheaper for manufacturing, and easier to option up order as they come through manufacturing.

If your vehicle didn't have lockers from the factory, it won't have the locker ECU, but I believe the harness is there to be able plug in the ECU.
How much if the harness going to front and rear diffs varies between models
