HDJ80 hp diff/loooong coils/panhard questions...???

Hi!

I think I am getting hold of an landcruiser 80 series front diff, high pinion with el-locker.

Anyone knows what gears I`m supposed to use? The same ones that fits all other 8" hp diffs? Or is there special ones for this diff?

I have 5:29 on my rig...

I also wonder if someone knows what kind of rear coils I can use? I need them to be longer than the 3,5" lift coils from trailmaster to compensate for my 5" lift in front.

I also would like to get an adjustable panhard-rod, but havent seen anyone who makes one...

appreciate all the help guys!

After you get your front 8" E-Locker installed, why then you can install one of Downeys Cable Locker conversions. The Landcruiser 8" front uses our Pickup 8" rear kit #41200-74. Enjoy!!!!!!

Well, except that the cable locker conversion can't be used in the FRONT of a leaf sprung truck. I don't even think it will work with coils, but I guess is depends on how the links are attached to the axle.

Question about the "Manual Locker" kit (P/N 41200-MAN) on this page:

Downey Off-Road

If I read the description correctly, does this mean that to engage/disengage the locker you have to reach under the truck and do it by hand?

You just need reverse-cut gears for the hi-pinion diff, but otherwise they are the same gears between the e-locker and non-locked diffs. Setup is exactly the same, except that the e-locker has one carrier bearing that is different, it's much larger. I think it's a dealer-only bearing.

Thanx! I`m waiting for a hopefully positive reply on my bid on it. Waiting untill i know before I buy me some youkon gears.

But I still need some advice regarding rear coils. I have a 5" sas kit in front and need some coils which will lift the rear as much as the front is. Anyone knows someone who delivers???

And also, an adjustable panhard rod??? Who makes them?

Thanx!

It would help us to know what type of vehicle you're talking about. 2nd gen 4Runner I assume?

I've installed mild (2") lifts in the back of these trucks, and I personally wouldn't go much higher with the stock 4-link parts (actually... I guess technically it's a 5-link). The stock mounts on the rear axle can't take much flex before they start to tear off. If you really need that much lift, I think you'd be better off converting to leafs.

Yes I do have I 2.gen runner... my bad...

And I do have gotten some parts from pro-comp to lower the 4-link arms. And an adapter from all-pro to level out the panhard rod.

I also have ordered some new link arms from all-pro with jonny joints. So I think (and hope) I got that part covered.

But I need additional 1,5-3" of lift rear...

But your reply is good, and I appreciate your answer but I guess I should have been more precise when I asked... :)

In my experience it's not the arms that are the weak point, its the mounts on the axle housing. Specifically, the upper mounts are really tall, so in extreme articulation the torque on them can actually tear them off the axle housing. I had it happen to me once way out in the middle of nowhere in Moab once, it was a slow ride getting off the trail. I have a picture of the carnage somewhere but now I can't seem to find it, it happened waaay back in 1999.

The welder that I found in Moab that fixed it for me says he sees this a lot with these type of axles, more often so with Jeep TJs. You can gusset them to add strength. Something to consider doing.

I am running OME 860's with a similar setup......They are great. I am running All-Pro adjustable upper arms with a custom adjustable panhard bar.

As far as the e-locker goes, I would contact 12voltguy, Inchworm, or ORS for the wiring. I just installed a TRD e-locker in my front end last week. Sounds like we have very similar vehicles.

Hehehe... very cool that link still works. I took all those photos, seems like sooo long ago now.

I have dual e-lockers, love them. Been using them quite a bit the last week or so in the snow. I built my own relay box:

It lives under the shelf in the back of my Xcab, pass side.

Yes, this I will check out and probably do. I still consider doing the swap to leafs, but not until I have tried the mentioned mods first...

I checked out the springs and they look perfect. Will order them on the other side of christmas. Where do you have info on your car? website/project thread??? I NEEEED TO SEE IT... :hillbilly:

I think I will buy the original Toyota control unit to the locker... If I get my hands on it...

I'm not too familiar with the second gen 4Runners, but don't some guys throw the stock front springs out of an 80 series in the rear of their runners for a taller more flexible lift than what comes in most kits? That could be a cheap and easy option given the number of modified 80 series on this forum. I know my old front coils are living happily under the rear of a built up runner somewhere.

Downey, I didn't see any mention in his knixen's post asking about your products. Could you keep the advertisements to the vendor section? I find your off topic and unsolicited plug to be in poor form.

The stock front coils fit 3rd gen 4runners...the rears fit 2nd gens

I found the stock coils way too soft for street use. the back end would flop around even with good shocks.

TOTALLY agree. Very inappropriate.

Seeing that in person was awesome. I wish I had spent another hour laying under your truck figuring out how you wired everything!

Thanx Marc!

The adjustable panhard rod, did you make it yourself?

Why didn`t you get the hp diff in front?

I have ordered the same all-pro arms that you have installed, as you said... Very much like your truck!

I even considered the same front bumper, but due to legal issues in Norway I didn`t get it. I got the trail-gear winch mounting plate instead, and hopefully it will arrive tomorrow:D I will paint and mount it next week.

I have ordered the rear coils, like the ones you have so thanx for your advice!

You can check my buildup thread here: Knixens 4-runner 36" irok goes SAS - Pirate4x4 Skandinavia

I have these pro-comp parts which I haven`t installed yet, together with the long-slip kit from All-pro.

How long travel do you have on your rear shocks?

Again, thanx for good advice all of you guys!!!

Your runner is sweet....I cant read your writeup though:confused:

The Panhard bar was purchased from another board....was made for a similar setup 4runner.

I didnt go HP because I got the TRD e-locker for a real good deal.

rear shocks are 12 inch

Sounds like you have a good plan.
