Getting my 1979 FJ40 electrical issues sorted as I’m supposed to be getting my body back from paint soon and want to get everything wired asap.

One of the issues is the knob/shaft of the hazard switch has broken off inside the switch

My idea was to take out the set screw in the knob, unscrew the few millimeters that snapped off, tighten the set screw back up, then make a new grove in the shaft so it fits back in the plastic piece.

Has anyone else tried this? Or had this problem? If I was handier I would buy some aluminum and re-make the shaft but let me know if anyone has any ideas. I’m assuming welding such a little piece wouldn’t work or be strong enough. Thanks!

Worth a try. Got any friends with say a Unimat lathe. Drill into the shaft, tap hole and screw in a socket head cap screw, adjust the length and diameter of the head, thread lock in place. Maybe someone has a dead switch.

Don't buy from Toyotamatt.. I ordered bunch of switches about 5yrs ago and he still has not fulfilled my order.. Unable to contact him anymore either..

Update- I filed a new groove and put it back together. Now the test will be if there is enough room between the knob and the switch body after the switch is installed back in the dash.

If it doesn’t fit my alternative now that I know that I can file a new tab is to use the longer shaft from a cheaper wash/wiper switch that I have that is broken as well.
