Put the transmission in any gear but neutral and the transfer case in either Hi or Lo but not locked. Jack up one rear wheel and one front wheel. Spinning one of the elevated wheels should spin the other one as well.

Also try with the same scenario but with the transfer case locked.

Unfortunately how the cruiser is stored in a corner no easy easy to lift one front wheel.
 
There is too much preload in the center cone LSD to allow the axle to spin freely. It works just like a clutch pack lsd.
 
Yes, it is a LSD in normal open mode, and locks solid when engaged. Cones tend to wear quickly when abused. Replacement cones are available.

Curious how worn the cones could be in 4,500 miles? Right now just trying to see if case is price actually working. The cable to lock and unlock the transfer was disconnected when I bought. Wasn't really looking to buy another cruiser back in 2007. It went for sale over a year before I bought and never looked into buying. But when seller actually put up a price I couldn't pass it up. I knew about this cruiser at least ten years before. Figure price would be at least five times as much. Paint was faded, seats were while worn from beinf kept outside. Everyone looks at those. I looked at what was a prototype. Just resently it seems people are now looking at it as something Toyota did at the factory and not some later conversion. Heard about it originally from Dave Gore. He believe it was done by Toyota.
 
With stock tires and 4500 miles, my guess is it will be in good shape internally, unless moisture or fluid deterioration got to it.

Very likely to be a factory Toyota project… could be worth a significant amount to the right person.

Think it's past very likely. Custom torque tube installed during frame assembly. M series transmission never used in the US market. Especially since there are at least two built the same way.

No not really. Bought it nineteen years ago so don't want to rush it. Only difference between the two is how the transfer is locked. Short cable on the transmission cover seems to bind with the sharp radius bend. Nylon coating on the stranded cable that slides inside is was peeling when I bought it. Something like the early choke/throttle cable that was a solid wire might be a solution.
 
Here’s a pic of the BW 1305. Design and operation look pretty clear. The cones are preloaded inward and contained inside the lower drive sprocket.

I see a set of side gear and pinion gears like an open diff. Never owned any LSD. The spring load cone not sure is it similar a lock right. I am also not sure where that lock goes. Ideally would be like a standard 4WD and lock the two outputs shaft. But wouldn't that be on the area the pinion shaft is rotating. I see an emergency drive indicator switch? Have two wires coming out in the area that I thought would indicate the transfer was locked? Also not sure the purpose of the two diaphragm control.
 
The rear output shaft locks to the differential case to create locked 4x4/emergency drive. That mechanism works similarly to a Land Cruiser e locker diff. Locking one shaft to the case effectively locks both shafts.

Jeep was really serious about emergency use putting the vacuum switch inside the glovebox. Obviously this case has been modified for the lever to control emergency drive. Toyota just refers it as center diff lock.

Curious with the one rear wheel on the ground and with transfer in neutral if it would be possible to over come the brake cone? Then lock the case and prevent the wheel in the front turning. I'm just trying to verify the case is working. Verifying the switch should be straight forward.

Unless I misunderstood the video the low range was over 2.5:1. That is better than anything Toyota ever installed in 40 series.
 
Unknown how much force is required to slip those cones. Try the one wheel deal, if it won’t move, you know the cones have at least some grip. Given the low mileage, stock tires, etc, I’d wager that it functions.
 
One wheel on the ground could not move more than a inch or two going back and forth. Both right wheels off the ground can spin the wheels. Both turn in the same direction. Try the high low shifter. Wheels locked in high and low. Spins in neutral. Didn't try this with the transmission in natural.
