Has anyone ever transplanted a 3.7L GM Inline 5cyl into their Toyota? It seems like a good motor, 250ish Horses and 23ish MPG.

The whole reason Im asking is; My grandparents had a Trailblazer they totalled 2yrs ago with this engine. Ironically it was running the whole time they were flipping and rolling and still runs. It needs a radiator and a new plastic engine cover. Now the insurance company wants only 500 for the motor/trans/case.
Do i take it and put it in my Toy? Or spend that much on a 3.4?

This motor had enough 'UMP' to make my grandma giggle when she floored it. And she used to drive a 1ton. Lotsa power+scary women driver above 50=One hell of a time...

Yes, it is a good engine, I remember reading an article about it when it came out, some interesting innovations used. But, I would think it would be tough, the engine is actually a structural part of the suspension, the IFS diff is bolted directly to the massive and very complicated oil pan. Take a close look at it, take a LOT of measurements.

buy a new trail blazer and put the engine in that. then take your toyota to the crusher.

Im hoping that was sarcasm?:flipoff2:

I didnt realize the engine was a structural part of the IFS. Neither did the insurance company.... Maybe a new 'custom' Oil pan?

From what I have researched I would need to keep the Auto or find one with a standard due to the computer, and Im getting 'lazy' having to downshift everytime I go up ANY grade. This might be a good project for my CAD Class at school. :)

Any Idea of the transmissino used?

you should be able to find a oil pan off of a Chevrolet Colorado or GMC Canyon or Isuzu i-Series 2WD.

I like the way you think. Ill call around, I know Ive seen wrecked 2wd drivetrains for ~700. It might be cheaper that way.

But with all the soccer moms driving them good ole' hummers down the road at 90 mph and not knowing how to avoid wrecks or what to do incase of one they are really easy to find... ;)

A serious alternative to the 3.0 in my 4door 4runner....

a friend went out of town and loaned me his 80(Lx450) ....yikes! Last time I checked, I'm not a Sheik, so between the spongy "bet you think I'm gonna stop ya, right?" brakes, way to soft and supple suspension, the small tank that makes stopping more frequent, 15mpg and maintenance cost. I think I'd pass unless I stole one.

I loved my 4runner. That is an understatement, I LOVE MY 4RUNER! I love its size, its braking and especially its handling. I can only imagine how it would be with this motor in it.....

I'm thinking expedition rig here so yeah, the short and long haul would rock with this motor.

and as much as I love a 22RE. I just don't think you could do enough to it to get some reasonable power and mpg while hauling the relatively heavy 89-95 4Runner around.

Well, if my 'owls' see anything out there Ill know pretty instantly. I got every junkyard/insurance agency from Joplin to Little Rock watching for me :)

Im really looking at going H3 Alpha drivetrain. You have a solid 5cyl/auto/4:1 BWD Case combo, and the drop is on the passenger side! Itll just have to look abit harder for the better deal!
