In slowly reviving my trail trash, a 1976 FJ40 with a 1983 carb on it, it's being hard to start.

I charged the batt, everything seems good, but, no coughing or anything.
Pulled the air cleaner, and the carb seemed awful dry inside.
Splashed a bit of fuel down her, and she fired right up and ran well to the store and back to replenish shop beeer supplies...

Looked at the fuel level window, and the level is at the bottom of the sight glass.
Now, I remember setting the float low-ish, years ago, so she'd behave better on angle, on the trails.

However, I think that low fuel level, combined with an accelerator pump diaphragm that's dry and shrunk from sitting in a dry carb for the last two years is combining to make for the hard starts.

Now that she's running, if I pump the pedal 5-6 times, she starts better.

My theory is that the float is too low, and I need to pop the carb top, and re-set the float so the level in the window is more or less in the middle; and that the accel pump will behave more normally once it's been wet for a few days, and has access to more fuel via the higher float making for more fuel in the bowl.

thoughts?

My thoughts are that im glad you filled the garage beer supply cause im due in friday to drink said beer
And I have a box of carbs here if needed.

Other than that makes sense kit is cheap if needed and should be able to do with carb on truck
