Dell T7600, Xeon E5-2643 @ 3.3 GHz, 128 GB Ram , dual raid 512 SSD, Dual Quadro K5000 SLi video cards.

If you listen closely you can hear Tim "The Tool Man" Taylor grunting in the background

Application is primarily Autodesk Inventor, although I have the full "ultimate" suite which includes 3DS Max, Mud box, and a host of other stuff. We through everything at this machine in hopes to help speed up some huge models. It's helped, but not significantly. Ultimately it's the archaic software code that hinders the speeds.
The task manager screen shot was taken during an image export of a fully rendered model. It took almost 5 minutes to type that short message :)
 
Jeff, Solidworks has the same issues. We (not me, but our draftspersons, ask Mat, he knows) would often curse at how the software struggled to manage large models.

One of the main issues I found that hindered the systems, even the nice one I got to test drive for a while was the hard drive. A conventional hard drive will actually affect graphic performance as well. First thing I would recommend is to install a solid state drive to run the OS, software and the file you are working on. Everything else can be sitting on a conventional hard drive but the large projects I would run off the SS drive. You might still max out the graphics and the processor but it will go a lot faster with an SS HD. In solidworks they are limited as to how much RAM the software is allowed to use. SO that means that no matter how much you put in there the software will still not use all of that. There are hacks to allow it to use more though (but not officially permitted by the software company). It wouldn't surprise me if Inventor had the same issue, after all Inventor stole a bunch of Solidworks employees when they started to create their software, which is why the two are so similar. With some of the calculations the PC is doing you might be able to dump more into RAM (which you are not using a lot of). When you do stuff like this check the graph for the HD, if you're maxing that out and getting faults then I would push for a SS HD.

The software code issues are mainly that it is a very old code, and only basically works off one core. Oh sure they have done things in recent releases that say it uses more than one core, but only in certain environments, and still not that well.

There a pile of tricks one can use to help things along. I've used them all as far as I'm aware. But on the plus side of things, as I sit and watch the spinning mouse icon, I can browse 'mud.....

Damn, that is a nice computer. One of my buddies is an engineer for a company that makes medical equipment, they just got a dedicated graphics server. All it does is just sit there and compute graphics, kind of like the cloud principle. Renders is a tenth of the time it normally takes.

Do you get to program them as well or run it? Do you get to use it for personal projects as well? makes fabbing for the trucks a breeze. Hell, one of those, an 8' CNC box/pan press and I wouldn't leave the shop, ever! ...well other than to go wheeling...
 
i can program it but at a very basic level. the supper dupper software has a usb stick and we only have two copies for the two full time programers we have. i usually just edit programs for adjustments or duplication but sometimes i do have to make new ones if there is a rush job and the programers are gone. i can make parts for myself. all needs to be done is to email the drawing to the programers and it will be on the next plate coming up.

we have a new cnc press brake coming up in the next week or so to replace the old dinasore one. but honestly all these awesome machines ruin the mood for true hobyist. you can probably make bumpers and skid plates for the whole mud forum in a couple of weeks.

the best part of the machine that i love is when punching tons of holes in a 25x8 plate. the most awsome live music that no drum set can match or speaker to reproduce.

Although I would have to disagree with it ruining the mood. The amount of cool stuff I could make with a setup like that would only improve my mood and just give me that much more ability to create cool things...but that's me. I respect doing everything from scratch, the hard way, but I prefer to work smarter than harder so if I have access to things that make life easier and get it done faster I'm all over it.
 
well you must realize this is a production machine thats ment to speed up time, crew size and shop size. for example a couple of months ago a contractor needed about 200 12x12x1 base plates with 4, 1 1/4 holes drilled on each corner. just imagine what sort of crew and how long it takes to make these. order came in around 4 in the afternoon. the program is very simple and fast for this. by 5 pm, i had the spindle going and by about 11 pm, these parts were built and ready for shipment for 6 am. no one can compete with this but you the costumer pays the price. thats what makes it awesome. otherwise it would be stupid to make one off parts.

sadly because of the convenience, the shop mamegers are getting lazy so sometimes they get the smiplest parts go through this not realizing the cost of operating, maintaining the machine or handling plates never mind the waste materials.

we also have one of these. although supper fast for production. this fxxxing thing can make allot of cool parts.

 
well obviously it's for production ;) I've done enough fabrication and worked on enough CNCs to know the difference and the costs involved. One off parts are not cost effective IF you are paying for programming the original part in a 3D software, then programming the machine, and the cost of production. If you have the programming for free, because you do it yourself and not count the time because it's more of an investment if you make more than one down the road, then it's worth it as long as you plan on doing it again. I've had prototypes cut and formed by one of the shops I deal with and not including programming time it was less expensive to get them to cut and bend it in comparison to me cutting, bending or worse welding and grinding. You of course want to minimize the one offs to maximize the potential of the machines, that just makes sense.
Usually the money is in making more pieces anyways.
 
Testing another new toy out at work, an Alienware A51 with 32Gb ram and a GTX 980 for less than what we are paying for those Quadro cards. Inventor switched to DirectX awhile ago, so gaming cards such as these should (and do) work just as well for a fraction of the price. And it looks pretty cool too :) It's fawking huge, and heavy.
