My handbrake stopped locking, there's no clicks...it just slaps about..? l had no forewarning this was going to happen....it just happened..? l haven't looked at it properly yet, just asking for ideas where too begin.. Any thoughts guys..?

Under dash pull lever? The pawl that engages the notches is stuck or the little spring that puts tension on the pawl is kaput. Spray some light oil to free the stuck pawl and see if it is under any tension and go from there. It's a simple little mechanism, not much to it.

When asking for help year/model/market helps. If the e brake works while the handle is pulled up, then a ratchet strap is the Gerry rig fix. I don't think the mechanism is meant to be worked on. That means you will likely need to drill out rivets to replace a plastic bushing, broken spring or pawl. Take the assemble out and look it over to see what it needs. Try spraying it inside with wd40 first in case the grease just got thick to work correctly.

Alright thanks its a '84 hj47...Aussie import... l know the cable adjusts on the mechanism...l'm going to be taking out the seats to remove the carpet due to water getting into the cab, l can then have a proper look at it, the shoes don't grip pulling the handle up so there's something going on.. l've a new set of shoes, fittings & cable to fit too...so l'll take the ratchet out & look at it tomorrow. Most of the parts are original/old & l was going to replace them as l go (or as the truck demands.. :hmm:).

Its not clear to me what is going on. Does the handle stay in the pulled up position - then cable or shoes. Handle doesn't stay up - then its likely something in the locking ratchet mechanism -spring/pawl/bushing bent/broken/worn out

The handle doesn't stay up & there's no ratcheting...it just flops...so part 2 of your reply sounds like the area to look at.. Thanks for the info its appreciated.. Does the mechanism split apart ?...1/2 & 1/2...like a V...?

I think its wasn't meant to be taken apart or it would be screwed or bolted together. I'm guessing rivets and maybe spot welds. It should be obvious how to get it apart. Dremel tool to grind off or drill off the heads. Maybe a thin chisel to break spot welds. Most hardware stores have coil spring to match up, you will likely need to file out a pawl from some good steel if you want it to last.

Thanks... l'll do that, l'll try to rebuild it using small bolts/nuts for future repairs instead of rivets/spot welds. l've pieces of steel l can adapt for the pawl...
