I ordered in some of the hand throttles that Nathan has for sale in this thread. They are quality units!

Ok, so first off I have a FZJ80, so the throttle pedal bracket and mount were already there, which made it very easy to install. I also helped install on a FJ80, and other than welding on a mount to the pedal, the install was exactly the same.

First off, I took two 3/8" SAE washers and stacked them on the cable and used one wrap of electrical tape to hold them in place during assembly. This was done to space the knob in just a little bit. I did not run the spacer that came with the cable.

Second, I used a 1/4" compression by 1/8" pipe fitting for the cable mount. I used a 3/8" 24 die and ran it down the pipe side to convert the fitting to standard bolt thread, then I added the nut and washer to be able to mount it. I had to file flats on opposing sides of the 3/8" threads so it would slide into the existing cable bracket by the throttle pedal.

For the cable stop, I drilled and tapped a small piece of aluminium, but you could go to your local auto parts store and buy one.

I also used a small plastic square bushing that snapped perfectly into the pedal bracket. This made a positive connection to the pedal that would not slip out, but also allowed the pedal to slide up and down the cable during normal throttle use.

It took under an hour to do the whole setup, and it works flawlessly, definitely a winner!!

I wonder if they work better than the factory unit. I ended up having to remove mine, because it kept causing the idle to go up irratically, even after I tried to adjust it. I think the problem is that the short amount of movement, in an attempt to keep one from overreving the engine, doesn't leave much room for slack to keep the pedle from hanging up.

Does this one have a wider range of movement?

If there is not enough length in the cable there is an issue with how the routing was done. It took me some time to get routed well but there is plently for the cable to pull in.

Personally the engine logo looks kinda cool but too antiquated for an 80. Than again that might be the appeal for others.

I thought it looked good.

Anyways, pictures are the thing now. Every new car I get into nothing is spelled out anymore. Everything is just a picture, I guess it applies to more than just english speaking people.

Nice work!

Thanks, it was definitely the easiest, cheapest, and best upgrade I have done since the CDL switch and 7 pin mod.

My OEM hand throttle works great, but the knob came off few times when I pulled on it.
What's a good way to secure the knob to the cable?

The picture looks better if it is right side up:flipoff2:.

This hand throttle has enough adjustment to red line my 3FE even with the 2 revolutions of slack mine has. And it beats having my boy sitting in there while I air up 10 tires like I did on my last run. $ for $ the best & easiest mod I've done to date.

Who would've thought using a pipe fitting to set this up? After personally wrenching on a number of trucks with Lumpdog, even this made sense. And, as always, It works!

Thanks for the writeup, lumpdog. The pipe x compression fitting worked great. I used a crimp-on cable stop and adjusted it by clamping the cable in a vise and using a claw hammer to move it as needed. Make one like like lumpdog did or buy one like it.

Also, the square bushing is also known as a square license plate nut (or something like that), size #8. I had to go to two hardware stores to three hardware stores to find one, although I later found them at the second one. Look hard.

This might be a good alternative to fixing my cruise. (I need to see if my VSS is screwed.) I live in the flat lands, would this work as a cruise of sorts.

Poor-man's cruise control...

Excellent.

Just got my second round of cables in from Nathan, just thought I would bump this thread for him!

On a side note, this has been in a year and worked flawlessly, one of the best mods I have done. Great for warm up, jump start, OBA, etc.
