I definitely agree with everyone who has said to go rent a couple handguns first. Personally, I recommend either a Glock of your preferred caliber (45 has good stopping power behind it...), a 1911 (these are tried and true to be good firearms), or possibly even a Taurus Judge if you're looking at a revolver. My next purchase is going to for sure be a Judge. You can stagger your rounds between a 410 shotgun and a 45, and have quick access to either.
Also, ask at a local gun store. Small business owners are usually quite helpful and can make some good recommendations. Hope you can figure it out!
i have owned several keltec pistols and i would never use one as my ccw gun because i dont trust them i have had to many misfires etc. a springfield xd40 is my gun of choice and i also carry a north american arms 22mag 5 shot revolver in a necklace holster as a back up
Little late to the party here, but why limit yourself to just one firearm? I have several to fit different needs.
For personal defense I have a Browning HP, and Colt 1911. These are great for taking camping when the biggest animal I have to worry about has 2 legs.
If I am going to be anywhere that something 4 legged can be looking at me for lunch, then I take my trusty old Virginian Dragoon 44. I take it out 3 to 4 times a years and will run 30 or so rounds through it to make sure I stay proficient with it.
Someone further up mentioned that no matter what you have, it is no good to you in a pack. Carry it in an easily accessible holster or don't bother. If a bear does come at you, there will not be enough time to dig through you pack to get it out.
Glock if it fits your hand. I had a Springfield XD9 SubCompact and it was stovepiping randomly on different ammo. I loved the gun and the way it shot, but I couldn't trust it to carry. I have a Glock 17 and a 26 now...great guns and seem to shoot everything. I prefer 9mms for cost of ammo/ease of shooting and follow-up. Not as fun as a .45 or .40, but it's what I use.
Revolver is best camping type gun IMO. I like S&W (steel ones...not that craptanium stuff some are made of) or Rugers .357s.
When I lived in Alaska it was my 12 gauge at the camp site...
I like my FN Five. Seven real light high capacity(20rnd mags) easy to break down 2 clean and 2300fps muzzle velocity penetrating power! I also am digging the FNP tactical 45.
