I can't remember if the LMR240 has a foam dielectric. If so, it is gennerally not recommended for mobile use, as it does not like heat, and the foam can get crushed by things and mess with the SWR.....

is the Pro520XL worth the $14 more?

For $15 you get PA capability, instant ch 9, and an RF gain control.
The first 2 I've never used, but the RF gain can be useful if someone's signal is overpowering. Probably wouldn't miss it that much if it weren't there though.

I've had a 520 in my 70 for at least a dozen years, and recently bought another for my BJ74. Good solid little radios.

Not worth the extra money for me.

Edit:
Here ya go $27.99Midland® Compact 1001Z 40-Channel CB Radio - RadioShack.com

Or ship to store for $29.99

This is the exact radio I have. They go on sale from time to time for $29.99. I like it because it's small and has the ch9/19 switch.

Okay, one more- I'm now curious as to how you guys put something like the SBB-25 in your vehicle when you take it with you... that's one big antenna!!! where you guys store them? I was thinking a PVC pipe strapped to the roof rack or somewhere inside the cab?

$5 or so in parts from Home Depot. The foam pipe wrap just fits inside and keeps the antenna from rattling around.

Dan, you rock!- Where do you have your pipe though? roof racked? I'm going to have to get a rack now... on the list.... again....
I zip tie it to the cargo rack on my FJ40. I use a different antenna in the UZJ100, that one fits on the back seat floor.

I've run cb's for years having been introduced by my dad in the 70's. I've had handheld cb's, not worth it my opinion, and I've had a couple 510's. That is a great radio. Period. My radio tuner guy(truck stop shop) says he's seen those things work after having been run over with the lights popped out. After tuning the radio to run properly ($25-$35) I swing needles in the middle of the day, in the Denver metro area, on channel 19, 8 miles away near a 10. I'm also running high end components.

Your stock mic will last a few years ( I love the size), but I've got a Road King 56 and you just can't beat that imho. Something you might want to look into down the road. Might.

Your Firestick will be okay. I've always run Wilsons and think there is nothing better. They're a little harder to tune, but, worth it. Period. Also run a good coaxial. Don't buy cheap stuff, it will fail or won't tune.

Your 510 probably won't fit like that '95's. That ashtray size should be different, more like my '93's and I don't have mine mounted permanently yet. I was considering the same area. Right now I just have it velcroed underneath until I figure a final solution. I've had a a '92 Toy truck and a '96 T100 that had the same ashtray as the 95-97 80 and the 510 fits right in those like it was designed to! I just removed the brackets and snipped the two plastic braces out of the back of the hole and pushed the radio in and they stayed that way in both rigs for years w/o moving.

The reason I've said all this about the c.b. is because it is no fun to have a radio that doesn't work very well. It's downright frustrating to have somebody tell you they can't understand you or all they hear is a squeel (usually a mic issue). You can't go wrong with youir choice inthe 510. Wilson antenna, good wire, put a mic in your wish list and when you have an extra few dollars get it tuned. It just makes it that much more enjoyable w/o breaking the bank.

Just entering the ham world myself so I have no opinions there. That's actually why I'm reading this thread, trying to get more educated. I am enrolled in a technicians course starting at the end of the month with my whole family.

Once you get your ticket you'll laugh about 10 Mile contacts, even a poor 2M set up will work great at that range. A good set-up will work contacts much further away.

I was just about to post a thread on antenna storage for those of us who mostly use CB and HAM on the trail on the weekends but live in cities and have to contend with drive thru's and office and mall garage clearance issues during the week. this is a very nice solution. I am going to post a separate thread though to see if others have equally good ideas.
Thanks
