Looks great Pint, very familiar! I dig the blacked out trim and am envious of the sliders and bumper. Soon...

I removed the emblems before painting the center caps. They didn't want to come off, but with a little coaxing, they pop off.

no clear coat with VHT, ill make sure of that. what about priming the rim? same proccess just without the clearcoat?

Thanks

Yes, you can prime them, would recommend it. VHT has a Yellow Zinc Chromate primer that is best suited for aluminum. My guess is that it is intended for bare aluminum.

I plan to use their dark gray primer and satin black wheel paint.

These guys have great rpices on VHT paint: http://www.speedunleashed.com/vht-paints-and-chemicals.html

Just an FYI - If you use VHT Wheel Paint DO NOT use clear coat! Thier wheel paint is designed to be used without it.

From the VHT website (provided above), looking at the descriptionn of the VHT wheel paint, quote:

"Add VHT Clear Coat (Product # SP-184) for that added protection and luster."

Grego, I used basically the same process and Dupli Color you did. I have been very happy with the results and durability. I have only had 3 or 4 minor chips in the last 6 months. All were very easy to touch up. Well worth the $30 I spent to paint the rims! Here are a couple pics:

grego/pint fek those rims look good.
i've got the 16" steelies..actually i have 13 of them now due to eBay and me trying to figure out what i need.
They are damn frigging heavy tho. I had the factory crappola Grandtrek blow with my steel wheel....fek....never had a flat ever before in 20 years....damn thing was heavy.

what weight is the 295 with the alloy wheel? - i dont need to know the weight unless you know it.... i mean is it humanly liftable? and no i am not a linebacker!! hehe...just 95kg here...not as fit as i used to be tho!
the 16" steelies are not light.

mooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo i just weighed my 16" alloy with a 285/75/16 BFGoodrich All Terrain T/A, it was 83.8lbs, weighed it three times.

The OEM 16x8 steel wheels weigh about 41 lbs each. The BFG AT/KO in 285 size weigh 55-57lbs depending on load rating. Add 1lb for balancing weights because they ARE BFG's (joking) and it should be about 96-98lbs per tire/wheel. The 295's are 58lbs ea.

By deduction, you can estimate the stock alloy wheel weighs about 29 lbs, granted Loud's tires are D load and near 100% tread. Weight of dirt, powder coating and compressed air not factored in.

Loud, that tire is awful dirty for that nice shiny rim! Maybe you need some Armor All?

That's what all the cool kids are doing these days.

Armorall is so 2007.

well after going on a wheeling trip where Mike puss'd out and didnt come, i forgot to drop my spare and scrub it down.

rant

Oh and I really hate armor-all, not for the shiny-ness but because I almost crashed the 911 after Porsche decided to wash the car for me and put tire shine on. When I went to take a turn at high speed, the sidewall rolled over, armorall hit the road and the car went sideways.....I was looking at the center divider. I always drive it with the traction/stability off, so I just countersteered and saved it, but now I really hate that s***.

Loud, I was kidding about the armorall! I haven't used that stuff in 10 years! To keep this tech...your powder coated rims are still looking sweet!

Which VHT website did you hit? vhtpaint.com has been off-line for some time while they upgrade...

I got the info about not using the clearcaot with the wheel paint from a reseller, Caswell, Inc., "Warning: Clear coat is for use on polished or bare metal surfaces only, and should not be used over any painted finishes." This is specifically addressed under the section with the VHT wheel paint... It is possible that this is refering to the clear coat intended for wheels only.

It's possible I read it wrong, but thats as close to the horses mouth I could get with the VHT site being down.
