Not saying it's bad, but you could buy a GX460 rack for less than half of just getting the base Toyo one and not have to ream spindles. It just requires the two mounting holes to be drilled out a bit bigger.
The GX460 rack and tie rods are all bigger already, and when you order a rack from toyota/lexus you get new tie rods.
I used a 9/16 drill bit to open them up, and you want to buy two GX460/5th gen 4runner bolts and nuts to replace your old ones. The rest is direct bolt on. It's slightly harder to fit in as it's slightly bigger in most dimensions, but I did it in my driveway on jack stands without raising the motor.
If you want significantly stronger I think you have to look at doing a LC200 or Tundra rack. I don't really know the ins and outs there aside from more money and more things need changed.
Toyo also has a 5th gen rack with their LC tie rods that is another incremental improvement. I have heard a lot of people say only strengthening the ties rods a lot isn't the best idea as it will just move the failure to the rack, and at least a tie rod on the trail isn't that bad to do where a rack is bad (and who carries a spare rack.)
What shop in socal?Hello all, I have a GX 470 07 model, it appears my power steering rack is going out, very vague steering. After reading the PITA of DIY I will take it to a shop, I live in So Cal. towing can really expensive but this will be difficult to find the right shop.
I guess there are 3 options.
Factory Lexus
CVJ I think they are called
460 mod
Stock vehicle full dealer maintained to 205K miles, 2nd owner.
So if I will have the rack and pinion replaced what else needs to be done at the same time?
My local repair has a off road euthanized and is is well versed in Toyota, they do allow me to purchase the parts or they can for me, I just pay the extra so they keep their margins. No worries there, I get it. It will be expensive, pay once cry once and get it correct.
Has anybody done a build thread for something like this.
I replaced my air bags, so even if I put new shocks on I will keep the air bags but buy the spring for future install.
Thanks in advance
I went to Longs in Menifee off Ethanac and the 215 freeway, there is Precision Alignment and Brake in Temecula. Biggest problem with finding the right shop is before you need to tow it. I am sorry for ghosting this thread. My tires are shot and I watched for sales but I could not find anything but missed the sale at Sam's buy 3 tires and get one free, This rig is still a mall princess and I drive it about 5k a year. So once I get the ties and an alignment I guess I will find out what else is wrong with it. Full dealers serviced up to 205K miles with a few deviations. What shop in socal?
What’d you end up going with?I need to replace my Rack & Pinion on my GX.
Are there any recommendations on aftermarket Racks or should I just bite the Lexus price bullet?
Any "nice to know" tricks when doing this in my garage?
Many Thanks!
