OK, I am having these same grinding in reverse symptoms noted per the above threads. For the first time in my experience, on Monday after driving 10 miles I put my 80 into reverse on a steep downhill, and I got the noted gear grinding noise as I tried to back up the hill to park. I put it back in neutral, waited a few seconds, back into reverse, and it did it again. I found some flat ground and checked the fluid level. The truck was warm and the ATF level was in (the low end of) the normal range while idling. The fluid looked and smelled normal.

The ATF fluid is about a year old; I exchanged about 14 quarts using the external cooler hose method. Redline ATF.

Tonight I drove to the gym (5 miles). As an experiment to see if it would do it again, I backed up to a "deadman", held the brakes with my left foot, put it into reverse and got the same grinding gear noise when I gave it moderate throttle. I made sure the transfer case shifter is fully in H.

So, does anybody have latest and greatest advise on what I should do/try next? Anybody have any issues with Redline ATF? I am thinking of exchanging it for some other fluid as an experiment.
