Got a 200 piece Craftsman Mechanics Tool Set for Christmas, but the box it comes in is horrible and all the sockets end up where they aren't suposed to be. Looking for a storage solution that would be just as home in my Cruiser as it would in the shop. Any sub $50 suggestions for what I'm looking for?

tool bag and don't take it all with you, only the tools you'll need (although whichever you leave behind will be the one you need :D ).

Someone once made up a decent tool list for anything you'd need to fix about 75% of what you'd expect to encounter - pretty small list really.

Trying to find something like a SnapOn box that can be mounted in my Cruiser and then un-hooked and sat on the floor of the shop, without the price of the SnapOn. Like you said, the one I don't have will be the one I need, so I'd rather it be a tool I not own that I need, then one I have but left at home that I need.

Also, these tools wouldn't be just for trail repairs, I use my tools on stuff at other's houses, school, work, etc. It would be semi-permanant in the Cruiser, just be removed when I'm using them in the garage.

Tool Bags

Check out the bucket boss stuff - really nice and I just got a set (tool roll and wrench roll for Xmas). They pack up nice and don't make noise. Not sure about you but the std tool boxes I throw in my cars/truck make constant noise which really annoys me. Plus I have a LR so I always need my tools with me:grinpimp:

They make bags also. Look around. Here is one site with them and good people to buy from: https://www.expeditionexchange.com/bucketboss/

Best tool box hands down is the CPL tool storage sold by Northern Tools and others. Easiest organization and handiest to get to every tool in a small general tool set like yours. Heavy and not trail friendly but best toolbox for mobile use.

If its going in the back of an FJ40 with no top then an ammo can that has good seals is what I'd use. Most of my tools are rust colored from the "normal" tool boxes I use that are not water tight. Whatever you use, make sure you can and do lash it down in the truck. It would suck big time to either get hit in the head with the box or lose it over a cliff during a roll...

Sears has some very cheap plastic "truck" tool boxes. I have 3 of those, One for sockets, one for wrenches, one for other tools. I store them along with abunch of other stuff, in an 81mm ammo can I got from the local army navy store for $20. you could bolt it down or strap it down with the carry handles for easy removal.

Ammo can there are several others on right now, this was the cheapest by one dollar.

tool boxs scroll down to truck boxes 3 sizes.

A friend of mine has a pretty easy to make / cheap tool carrier. He used a decent toolbox with handle, bought some high density foam, and then drimmeled out slot for various tools/sockets, etc. The foam is hot glued to the insides of the box to keep it in place. Turned out pretty slick.

Socket holders have worked well for me in the past. Also I carry a small canvas bag

I got a cheap HF type aluim briefcase toolbox. One day Frydaddy needed a tool and I gave him my box. when he was done he put it behind my truck. Yep I ran it over. Its not straight anymore, but I still use it.

A wrench wrap, a socket holder, and the rest is just tossed in. I get by

I have this one: http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?BV_UseBVCookie=Yes&vertical=TOOL&pid=00930792000
It has a 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 drawer plus an open drawer for pliers, wrenches, hammers, etc. Each drawer slides out and you can take it under the truck, etc. I like it because I can pull a drawer of a certain size, crawl under the Cruiser and I have all of the sockets right there at my finger tips. It fits in the back easily and I can move it from the work bench to the Cruiser easily.

Greg, that is pretty much what I was looking for. But it sounds like tool rolls might be better. Anywhere to get a couple of them for cheaper, and where do you get those socket holders (the long plates that have tabs for the sockets to fit on)?

As Spresso said, you can get just about all of it at Sears. Tool rolls, tool bags, boxes, socket holders, etc.
