I came across this 2001 UZJ100 with 89,000 mostly highway miles. Seller is firm at 19,999. Seems to be in good shape. Paint and interior are in great shape. Here in Colorado 100's seem to be holding their value pretty well. Is the price decent?

The NADA average trade-in price is $20,700 and average retail is $23,975. The silver color is popular. If the maintenance records are avaialbe (at least the oil change records), it has a clean CarFax, and the tires are decent it sounds like a fair price. Just so you know going in, the 90,000 mile service includes replacing the timing belt and cost approximately $500 or more. The price increases if additional preventative maintenance is done at the same time such as replacing the water pump, idler pulleys, tensioner, cam seals, front crank seal, and change all the fluids. jp

Looks like a great deal. You can tell a lot about how it was cared for by just looking at its general condition. Is the interior in excellant shape? dings and scrapes on the outside. You will have to do the 90K mile service but it is still a great deal and 2001 is a very good year for the LC. Go for it.

Ask the seller to do the 90k maintenance as part of the deal. All they can say is no.

Thanks for all the help. Seller has not done the timing belt. Also the sunroof is jammed and the front windshield has a crack in it. I'll see what I can negotiate.

Seems like you are looking at about a grands worth of work there. Ask him to cover all that at the asking price and if he balks bargain down to splitting the cost. At worst if you pay full price AND do the repairs you are still getting a good deal, not a GREAT deal, but good. Just make sure there are no other issues. Might be worth paying to have it looked at. I know if I were spending that much I would like to know exactly what I was getting for my money. Good luck!

The windshield, timing belt etc, and sunroof put this in the good-but-not-great deal arena.

For that price I'd definitely have a mechanic give it a thorough inspection. I bought my '01 in February, and the 'steal' I got it for dropped to a 'very good deal' after 4 calipers and 2 rotors. I'm not complaining and wouldn't do it differently even if I could do it again. I'm just suggesting that if you run into another $1000 in unexpected repairs like I did, in addition to the other stuff yours needs, it may not even be a 'good' deal anymore by the time you get it in shape.

Sorry remmrtn, I need some coffee. I didn't mean to paraphrase most of your reply. So for those parts I say "x2."

ToothDr, I hope it works out. Keep us posted.

I would figure that a cracked windshield would not pass the state vehicle safety inspection. Do they do that in CO? Here in MD we definitely factor inspection into the price. An inspected vehicle should have decent tires, brakes, etc. Typically that moniker is worth the cost of all those parts - say $1500.

On the alternative, when I bought mine from a dealer, they "inspected" it and the tires were bald, which I then negotiated a price reduction for.

Good Luck

I would think the guy knew that the windshield was broken and the other stuff was pretty obvious and factored that into the asking price. You can offer less and site these items and see if he wants to sell, I would. The reason a lot of people sell is because they just get tire of fixing stuff. I'm sure that these items are apart of the reason the guy is selling.

There is no safety check for the cracked windshield here in CO. JUst the emmissions. After looking at this 100, I'm going to pass . Here in Denver there seems to be quite a few 100's on the market right now. Also, I'm considering the 03-05 for the 5 speed tranny. I'll keep my eyes open. Thanks for all the help. The search goes on.

Used vehicles are on sale for a reason. I think the best way to go is offer cash for what you think it's worth knowing the work to be done. Tell the owner what you are using to set the value and don't pressure them. Give a price and your phone number.

Is the crack across your line of sight ? if so thats $500-800. Eventually you will get a ticket for a cracked windshield if it appears to obstruct the driver's line of sight. If it's small along the bottom of the windshield no big deal.

Beyond actually replacing the timing belt (~$400) I don't think you can reasonablly figure in the cost of the other preventative maintnence most of us here on MUD do at 90k (waterpumps, all new fluids ect..).

Do you still have emmissions tests in Denver? We just got rid of them in El Paso county. The newer cars don't have emmisssions problems at high enough rates to justify the testing program.

Interior color is grey/stone. It does not have nav.. It does have the cheesy faux wood dash trim. Truck is still for sale here in Denver.
Link to car is below if anyone in intersted. I'm set on looking for an 03+

I agree on the pass part. That is high IMHO - exact reason I went out of state to purchase, these Co. folk want too much for their 100's. I think by him saying he is firm, he is not interested in selling it. I love mine so far, but not looking forward to the tire purchase - almost a grand there - something to keep in mind when searching for that '03. Good luck.

Don't feel bad, guy at the gym has a ZO6 and every 8K miles he spends $2K on new tires :(
