I will be heading through from San Diego L.A, after afew days there, to Las Vegas, Salt lake city to Golden CO in a couple of weeks time, and will need to stock some camping gear into the thing, to leave with the car.

Should have some spare time on the Sat /Sun 23/24 Feb while in San Diego, to have alook around, if anything there, anyone knows of, but happy to call in anywhere, along the way people suggest.

Main things will be,

Thermorest base camp, or similar mattress.

I have the canvas swag for the outside.

Presso coffee maker

usual camping bits and parts, crap, and some action packer style containers to store them in.

Will bring my firesticks, and camp oven/frypan/griller.

If anyone knows any good camping stores along the way worth a look, would be grateful if you could post them up.

Cheers,

Coghlans makes reasonable quality camping gear if it's not a lifetime investment. You can find their products at most chain and local sporting goods stores.

If its just for the one trip you could hit any WalMart for most of the odds and ends.

Big Five sporting goods stores are located throughout the southwest. They have mid quality products, Coleman etc., at good prices.

Cabelas has high end stuff at premium prices, also fewer stores than most.

Sportsmans Warehouse is somewhere between Big5 and Cabelas in terms of what they offer. Item for item they beat Cabelas on price hands down every time.

I do not patronize REI unless there is no choice. They have a very anti OHV (Off Highway Vehicle) corporate culture and support many organizations that are trying to close huge areas to OHV activities.

Edit: If you have a hotel you will be staying at check to see if you can have stuff delivered there from on-line vendors. Some hotels have a concierge office you can ship stuff to. I've done this with trade show supplies in the past.

Check out Bass Pro Shops as you approach Vegas.

REI is probably the best hiking/backpacking outdoor adventure stores around. They are like a warehoused sized Kathmandu. They even have their in house brand in a similar fashion to Kathmandu. If you want lightweight travel fast gear, this is your destination. Every major city will have one in the Western US. You can even order online ahead of time and have your gear ready to pick up in the store when you arrive. Shipping to stores is free.

Bass Pro Shop, Sportsmans Warehouse, Cabelas are more hunting oriented, hunting/fishing etc. They have a good selection of car and campsite based gear.

Big 5, Sports Chalet, is so so but might have something affordable that will just need to hold you over for a few weeks, Coleman, etc.

Walmart, Target (Target is very different here in US), K-Mart will also have limited affordable stuff that might hold you over for a few weeks, Coleman, etc.

Thanks Guys,

between a BAss Pro shop visit, and raiding Christo's camp gear he doesnt use now he has a retirement home on wheels, I think I got what I needed to make it all happen.

Turner's Outdoorsman have LA arae stores (Reseda-Los Angeles, Pasadena, Torrence)

Sport Chalet has a much bigger selection. For an action packer I'd just go to Do It Center or OSH.

Costco has an aweseome reutrn plociy--but you need to be a member

Not mentioned but usually find that surplus stores esspecially good ones have Some of the camping gear and or things for outings
