Why is the Gobi $1500 and the ARB is only about $800 (I say ONLY, but $800 is expensive too). I figured the Gobi would be cheaper. It doesn't look as strong either. Any ideas why the Gobi is so much?

I've dealt with both firsthand, both are great racks no doubt.
Why can ARB's be so much cheaper? Mass production... ARB has giant manufacuring facilities as well as out-sourced options, they have the ability to be really competitively priced on items like this. Either way I think both racks will suit your needs.

about the only complaint I've ever heard about the ARB racks was the weight.
I like my ARB a lot . It is plenty strong to stand on, is flat which makes it easy to load long things on and the wind noise is not to bad.

No wonder, you have an FJ.
On my 80 the ARB rack is LOUD and makes the sunroof unusable. But honestly i would imagine any rack on the 80 above the sunroof would be the same.
Other than that, i love my ARB rack. It is super stout.
