Hey guys,

The girlfriend drives a First Gen 89 4 runner, V6, manual, up on 33's - she bought it like this and has done very little to it since [read:...nothing. no maintenance. and she hasn't let me work on it ... ask me how pleased I am with this]

Anyways, during a recent cold snap [-30 Celsius] she tried to start it - it would crank and turn over, but didn't catch. After trying this for a while longer, she heard a "loud bang, coming from the passenger side, in front of the seat." She decided then that she was cold and was going to take the train to university.

Since then the weather has warmed up and her truck is starting fine - she's even started plugging it in when it gets seriously cold... However, since the "bang" the truck has been getting Horrible mileage, about 75 kms / tank.

She's decided that I can look at it now....

I'll be heading over there sometime tomorrow to see what I can sort out - i've worked on 40s and Im looking at Bj60s, but I know very little about the 4runners / PUs. Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Crash

turning over but not "catching" probably means fuel was going through the cylinders, into the exhaust, where it eventually blew up. It may have fouled the catalytic converter (or damaged it internally) or blew up an oxygen sensor, if it's new enough to have one.

:Dso what you are saying is AFTER the fix this fella needs block heaters

Sounds pretty grim...

What would cause it to ignite in the exhaust?

o2 sensor seems odd - if it blew it the circuit would run open loop - default settings which would still be better than 75/kms a tank. If all that unburned gas swamped the sensor, sounds like it would run lean...

As for the Cat, I have no clue as to what the emission control set-up on these trucks is like.

Not having seen it, I can't really comment, but she says it doesn't smell like it's running rich, no excessive smoke, and no performance issues - so I'm kind of stumped at this end; the only thing I can think of is she ruptured a fuel line after the pump, or maybe blew out a diaphragm in the pump? Again, not sure what the fuel delivery is like on these guys, so I'm deferring to you fine gents.

75 km per tank!!!!

I'd start by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes to reset the computer. Replace the O2 sensor and the cat as suggested above may be in order........ Check the timing (You have to jump the diagnostic connections to do this, procedure is in the FAQ here under trouble codes)

Check the plugs and wires.... 75 km's/tank is like 5 miles to the gallon.... something's way wrong!

Do you smell any fuel at all? :whoops:5 miles per gallon is a huge loss

I haven't seen it yet, but she says there isn't anything out of sorts with it.

But needless to say, I want to get it sorted out - we were supposed to take her truck up north to look at a Bj60 im looking at buying - its up deep at a farm thats all rutted and sloppy [my 98 2wd ranger cant make it through that, but I can sure tell you I was looking forward to a test drive....] but the truck cant make it halfway there with it's current range.
