i am a long time reader, but this is my first post. I got the fj40 bug and purchased my first one. I need any kind of advice on what I need to do to get a title here in georgia. It is a 74' fj40 and it has the VIN plate on it still. I have no idea where the original title is. What steps do I need to take? Anyone else done this before? Thanks for the help in advance. I'm sure I'll be posting alot sooner rather than later....

No title needed

Georgia doesn't require a title for a vehicle that old.

Just go to the DMV with a Bill of Sale and your checkbook.

They will look up your proof of Insurance in their database. No emissions test needed for a vehicle that old.

If you want a title, they may be able to provide a new one in your name.

Thanks. After getting the run around and two hours on the phone with my counties great tag office I got that answer. Next time I'll learn to just learn to wait and not call any tag office. Thanks again.

BTW, got any pics of yer new 40 to post up????

Congrats on your new ride:cheers:

I haven't picked it up yet.... It's not much right now but I plan on photo tracking the whole process. I have to warn you, it's not much of one now, but it's going to be a ground up job. Gonna start on the frame saturday.... (hopefully)

Pics will be up shortly though. Thanks. I'm gonna need all the support I can get

I recently bought a 97 Camry for my daughter. The car had been off the road for 2 years (no taxes paid). Fulton county made me pay back taxes on the car for the time I did not own it! Grrrr.

It is not just Fulton county. We pay the taxes on my project truck too. It is only a few bucks each year; but because it is not licensed for road use, the county never includes it with the bills mailed out for our other vehicles so we have to go down to the Tag office so they can bring it up in the system & we can pay.

just a sugestion. if you are not planning to put it on the road any time soon (a couple of years) for a rebuild, get the current owneer to leave the date off fo the bill of sale, this way you do not have to pay insurance and tag fees while you are rebuilding, you will only have to pay the back tax on it. the only draw back is the vehicle will still be in the current owners name until you get done.
