hi all, let me just start by saying im a novice! I read a lot, but theres a lot to learn.

I'm looking at gearbox options for the 1pz engine. Its an R151F, and it wont change down from 3rd to 2nd. also it may, or may not, go into first. All of these are while on the move, its fine when stationary.

I was talking to a guy who owned it, a mechanic, today. he said he got round it by double clutching it. I've never tried it, but ill give it a go.
also, he reckoned that a 3 liter landcruiser Prado gearbox would sit behind it.
I think he said I'd need the bellhousing from the current gearbox. I've never removed a gearbox, are bellhousings interchangable?

theres a world (i mean millions) of KZJ90 and KZJ95 3 litre prados in Ireland, and a smaller number of 80 series Amazon's.
I could pick up a Prado gearbox for very small money, in fact the guy knows where there is one and he reckons it's "a right good one" lol. Its prettymuch new. I'd really like, if it were possible, to put a six speed prado gearbox on there.
An Amazon box would cost me a bit more.

can anyone shed some light on this for me please?

solve the Sincro problems on your R151F it's nothing out of this world and it's normal to happen in a manual tranny ..

also cheap parts .. expensive will be the labor ..

Dont the prado gear box have the tail shaft coming out the centre of the back of the box?

I dont know.. im still reading here... I think the R151F is on the later LJ70', KZJ95's, and hilux surfs, all of which are plentiful here. I did read into rebuilding it, if i was to do that, id (cough) do it myself, - but i can get a new second hand unit for 2 or 3 hundred euros or so,
so i think thats the way ill go

Possibly, but this would be to do with the transfer case.

Redd, have you considered repairing the box you have? At least you will know its good for a long while.
The R151 is not the most bomb proof box in the Toyota range and with a 2nd hand box you may end up doing this again in 12 months time.

Rosco you could very well be right

but, I'm not hard on gearboxes or engines. my mechanic friend reckons the one he has in mind is nearly new, so its a lot easier, cheaper, and faster, than rebuilding. - if it'll mate up that is.
im prob asking the wrong question here, cos this is prado country more so than Oz or the Americas, but im egging to know if the later 6 Prado speed box will fix onto my bellhousing. then id get some mpg's

Then I say go for it.
Some of the other landcruiser gearboxes have different spline counts and input shaft lengths, but still have the same apha/numeral code like the H55f

I dont know about that:rolleyes:,Prado's from 96 on are very common in oz.We've had about 4-5 in our family

What are the ratios? Most 6 speeds seem to offer little benefits over their 5sp ancestors.
I would try the question on one of MUDs 120 or 150 series forums. There is most likely someone on there who wants to fit a 6 sp into his/her 5sp model

Redd

To shed some light on the issue. The prado II gearbox with 1Kz engine will fit in your 1Pz bellhousing because they have same bolt pattern, its a direct bolt on. The prado II gearbox with 2LTE engine will not fit because gearbox bolt pattern is smaller.
