Gas tank sending unit help

I have been battling for over a year with my gas tank gauge. It's a VDO gauge and VDO sending unit. The sending unit was for a tank between 6 and 12" deep. The 55 tank is around 5" deep. I attempted to make it work, but my gauge reads over full until near empty and then it reads near 3/4. I cannot find a unit that will fit in the tank.

My question: Has anyone found an aftermarket sending unit that works in the shallow tank.

My VDO gauge works in the 10 - 180 ohm range.

I have the OEM unit but it seems to read less than 10 ohms at full and doesn't register on the VDO gauge.

That's what I tried to do. Doesn't seem to work. I am going to tear into it tomorrow and see what else I can figure out.

I did. I tried to follow the VDO setup instructions for a regular install, despite having to cut some of the post off and shorten the float arm. they provided dimensions I needed to make the gauge register correctly. I emailed the dealer and he could offer no other sending units and said if less than 6" deep it wouldn't work.

I am wondering if I oriented the float the wrong direction (i.e. float toward rear vs. side) Not sure if that matters.
