Gas shock hood strut replacement

It can be done without a kit. I pulled the springs, ground off the hood brackets and reattached to the hood and then installed the struts in existing holes with some fender washers, which is the hardest part of the whole process. If you really want a challenge, you can try to recreate the hood brackets from some angle iron or aluminum, but I gave up on that after doing one side and reused the factory hood bracket. There's a number of threads that give strut length and force info.

Does anyone know who is selling the hardware kit and gas shocks to replace the hood springs in an Fj60

I admittedly have zero experience with the product, I just remember him posting about it in his build thread.
No worries. It is easy to install and does work. I think the struts will work better mounted to the fenders vs the firewall

I bought these off Amazon and they work great!!
I also bought a rivet nut tool to install super easy.

For $75 you can do it yourself easy. Struts are only $25. Tool is $50. Rivet tool comes with the right size nut for hardware with nothing else needed to buy to install. No flexing. Just be careful drilling hole on hood for rivet nut. Go slow so not to go through fast and make a dent on the hood from drill bit..... ask me how I know (very small dimple you can see from the top due to me being careless). Installed in 2024 and still flawless.... I even put them on my new landcruiser.

Hi Manu:

I just did an LS swap in my FJ60.
I like your post on the gas springs for the hood. Do you happen to have a pic of the cylinders installed that you could send me?

Thank you,

Kevin
