I have now tried to buy a Scepter MFC 20L fuel can from 2 websites. I get all the way through checkout and then I later get an email telling me I am getting a refund. I guess the spill proof container requirements have changed and this is making the Scepter MFC illegal to sell? Anyway, I really want a plastic jerry can (I'm sick of the metal ones rusting). It must fit into an Adventure Trailers Fuel Can Holder. I've done some reading at various sites and both the military water can and the fuel can are made of polyethylene. The water can has an additional "food grade liner" to keep the plastic taste out of your water. Can anyone see a reason I shouldn't just buy another water can and use it for fuel? Thanks

Welcome.

Have you seen these?

Wedco NATO Jerrycans and Spouts Water Fuel Moulded Products - Expedition Exchange Incorporated

These cans last a LONG time with out rusting. No leaking either. These are arguable the best cans available in the world. There are online wholesalers that sell used military surplus cans nearly identical to these for much less. If you want maximum lifespan and guaranteed no rust than I'd buy a Wedco can. If want a 95% shot a can that would out live you than I'd buy a used NATO surplus can. If you want to waste your money buy a leaker of a Scepter can.

If it were me, I'd rather not risk the accidental gas / water mix up. Right tool for the job solution.

Best of luck.

I contacted Scepter. They will not answer the question whether you could use a water can for fuel. They did confirm that regulations changed. They said "Sounds like you’re in the U.S., correct? That would explain why you’re having trouble finding MFCs.As a civilian you can’t get them in the U.S. anymore (Effective January 1, 2008). Our MFCs don’t meet new CARB / EPA regulations for portable fuel containers. The military is exempt…for now. It’s a shame people are becoming so desperate that they are considering putting fuel into MWCs. (you’re not the first)"

A few differences I have heard:
The fuel cans weigh more than the water cans.
The cap size is larger on the water can.
Some have reported the water cans leaking through the vent cap.

I would question the internal food grade liner holding up against any kind of fuel.

That's funny stuff ...

Maybe I just got lucky and have the 5 that don't leak ... even after many years of heavy use on several of 'em.

They fit perfect in the AT can holders and will empty into your gas tank much faster than anythang made.

You can still have somebody buy 'em in Canada and ship 'em to you ... it'd be well worth it.

I've never put fuel in my water cans ... but I can certainly verify the fuel cans are heavier. :meh:

x2, my Scepters don't leak at all. Seems like it's always the people that have never had one that complain the most about them.

As for your question, the mouth on my Scepter fuel can is a lot larger than the mouth on my Scepter water can. Not sure how you'd xfer fuel out, the Scepter spout def. won't fit on the water can.

I dont have any scepter gas cans, but I've had a used scepter water can on my rig for about 10 years without leaks - built like a tank.

I'm sure the scepter gas cans are leaky POS's - that's why the US military uses them - whatever :rolleyes:

Garret Wade no longer has it. The blue and red are gone. :(
Yes, that happened before...
Check them weekly, time by time they have them in stock !

I have a pair of Sceptor's that haven't leaked a drop.

They will swell in the heat or if you have major altitude changes while they're on the rig, but open 'em quick and that goes away.

And yes, you can pour a full can into the tank in about 1 1/2 minutes.

I like them :meh:

I have 2 brand new 20L yellow MFC's and justed ordered 2-20L green MFC's with yellow tag and gravity feed cap so I can use as my WVO tank inside rear of my BJ42. Also have 2-20L water cans from Scepter.

I am in the military and they are all we use.

You can still purchase the Fuel cans from dstactical.com They are out of Canada so beware of sticker shock on the shipping. The $exchange rate helps a bit. Nevets has a few left that would save shipping costs. I ordered 2 and with shipping it came to about $130 to Utah. It took a little over a week to get them. Rumer has it that dstactical will have to stop shipping them soon as well.

I've looked long and hard at using military water cans for fuel but there are several problems including the ones Trunk monkey brought up. You will need to modify the cap to take a viton seal of some sort. The sealing surface of the water can lip is very small and may not perform well. The fuel cans are like 10% thicker than the water ones. The fuel can has an insert in it to allow the cap to spin but keep the gasket in one spot so you can tighten it without twisting the gasket. All that said, I have emptied a water container full of water very quickly wil far less water spilling than any of my nato cans. It's very tempting to try it with gas.

I put all my fuel from my scepters and 3 metal jerry cans into my rigs today to rotate gas. I was very dissapointed to find that two of my old round holed metal jerry cans are now rusted on the inside. Looks like 'm in for at least two more scepters.
