Finally had some time to look at the somewhat sloppy steering on my 96' 80 series. After some brief research I decided to tighten the steering box via the adjusting bolt which made a significant difference, although I believe I may have over-tightened the steering as a few days later this has resulted in a significant amount of fluid leak from the steering box.

I've since backed off the adjustment to reduce the strain on the steering box and ensured the bolt is fit snug, although the problem persists. As far as I can tell, the power steering fluid is only leaking from the adjustment bolt, and is running dry after about an hour of driving each time.

My questions is whether this is simply a failed seal surrounding the adjustment bolt from within the steering box that can be replaced or what else may be causing this.

Due to being short on time I've also had to drive a short distance with essentially no fluid in the system, much to the dismay of my power steering pump, and am wondering whether this may have caused any significant long-term damage.

(not my steering box attached, although this is the adjustment bolt in question)

Appreciate your help!

those lock nuts tend to back off and leak sometimes, redhead even puts a special bracket on there to prevent it. Running without fluid is not good but i do know of several customers that have driven for months with no fluid at all and then put fluid in and it was fine.

Not your question, but worth mentioning... When adjusting the nut it is worth having both wheels off the ground and steering damper removed so you can see whether you have introduced any tight spots into the steering (check the full sweep from left to right and back again).
