FZJ80 Porn - Champion Beadlocks on OEM Wheels

So, I had five large boxes waiting for me when I got home today.

Now, I have to decide do they go on the 80 as part of the package, do they go on the Tacoma, or do I sell them.

I will start the painting tomorrow...strip them and go Duplicolor Wheel Coating in Graphite.

I am probably going to sell the 80...that is true. I really like the Tacoma and I think it is going to work out really well for what I need (once Markmodded). Plus, the dogs love the bed...they have a lot more room than in the back of the 80 with the ARB fridge. I just can't think of life without the 80...it's been my baby for 6 years!

But, the wife is not happy with 4 cars, especially with how much money I have sunk into the M5 and the 80...but, I did just get new WeatherTech mats and tinted the windows on the wife's Bimmer...so, that bought me some time.

Jordan, come over tomorrow morning and check out the wheels.

It may be the pic... but are those boltheads not recessed?!

I am planning on taking out the Powertank and ARB fridge, everything else is pretty 80 specific. I may leave everything in there and advertise it for a high price on some forums and eBay for a week...just to see.

The bolt heads are not recessed...most of the beadlocks that I looked at were not recessed. Champion only offered recessed bolt heads on one option, there C1 style.

Also, received my switches yesterday...these are the same switches that ARB uses. I also ordered a sheet of labels for the switches, they have almost every option you need.

These suckers should make for a very clean installation.

Where did you get the switches? Very cool.

A place out of the UK that specializes in Defenders. I will get the web address and post it.

Recessed bolt heads are harder to deal with than exposed. Once they get buggered up, you can grind them to get a wrench on them or vice grips. They still get puggered in the recessed rings.

X2 - worst case you can weld a nut to fubar exposed bolts to get them out. Good choice.

I like these alot. I've always loved the FZJ wheels and beadlocks on top of that make it even cooler.

I'm surprised at ya'll not liking recessed bolts though... Walker Evans, Trail Ready, even Allied steelies all protect the bolts. The Allied run a lip on the steel ring to keep rocks off the bolts.
I saw a DIY kit beadlock once grind almost every bolthead off when it got pinched on a rock. But I can see how a buggered bolt head would be hard if it did get that way in a TR or WE alloy ring.
Either way, these are awesome and will look SWEET on the taco!

The recessed option that Champion offers actually had larger holes for the bolts to sit in. Per Champion, this protects the bolts from getting stripped but, they haven't had too many issues with the bolts getting totally stripped...we will see how these work...if they are worth the investment.

I think that the extra lip that the Allied's offer is the best bet. It provides strength to the ring, offers a little extra protection to the bead and bolt heads.

One of the biggest issues I have with most DIY beadlock kits is that they're almost always plate steel rings. This gives a sharp 90* edge right next to the bead. A couple of my beads are lookin' shoddy because the ring has ground into the bead when the carcass is flexed.

Mark's beadlocks look good. Top-quality work!

when you get a chance and before you put them on... take a pic of the FZJ wheel without the ring on it... I wanna what they did. Did they remove and smooth any alloy or what?

I always round that sharp edge over with a grinder and smoth with a flap disc FYI
