Been thinking of picking up a full size domestic 4x4 3/4 or one ton, I have allways loved fords but have read that the ford 6.0 diesel is a dog, I like the look of the dodge but have never been a dodge guy, I am leaning towards a couple of year old duramax with 6 speed allison, currios if any of you guys have experience running full size domestic diesels ?

FORD(found off road dead)

'97 or '98 12 valve with a stick and be done with it!
Cheers!

X2 mileage of a diesel cruiser and real power. Downside it is a dodge, but that cummins will outlast the truck 3 times over. All others and even the new 6.4 cummins are pigs on fuel and a waste of money in my opinion. Even my 03 24valve cummins is a little thirsty compared to my brothers 93 12 valve, but hoping it is only a temporary truck for me.

well i was hoping to get somthing a bit newer as the price of used pic ups has dropped alot recently , i will have a look at the dodges you mentioned . i really need an extended cab , and will be using to haul a 26' 5th wheel around, and thats about it .

X3 on the 12 valve, I had a 90 W250 back in 90-2000 it got better mileage than my BJ74 and twice the torque, non intercooled.

x4 12valve Cummins. If you go for the Ford stay with the 7.3 Powerstroke. The Duramax is a gamble- we had one in the bush and had loads of probs with it. The Allison auto is tough, as we all know. You could always do what I'm doing right now- stuff a Cummins 12valve in your Ford.

I've had an '89 Dodge Cummins, great engine, s***ty build on the truck. The '89 was supposed to have manual tranny problems but I never had a problem. Torque enough to pull just about anything!! I would not object to finding a Cummins in my 'Cruiser one day.

Ya I heard stories of problems with the Getrag 360 tranny, I hear of people blowing them up leaving the stealerships LOL, It had 800,000km orig clutch yes and sold it complete for 5000 bucks, it took 10 minutes to sell it. Did not use a drop of oil. At 500,000 I traded the VE pump for the P7100 inline and turned it up to 300 hp

Just another data point...

My BJ74 on 37s ... 12-13.5l/100km
My 92 Dodge Cummins, stock... 11-12l/100km

Original Getrag tranny holding up fine after 401,500km (I bought it from the original owner) I don't think I've ever heard of a NV4500 going that long behind a Cummins without dropping the fifth gear out. Mind you, 92 is probably the lowest powered Cummins ever sold (160HP 400ft/lbs)

I have flirted with the idea of dropping the Cummins into a Super Duty. Anybody need a V10?

5th gear doesn't really drop out per se. The nut that holds 5th gear on the shaft backs off and 5th gear follows it, usually doing no damage. There are a few fixes for this issue.
